Trauma Exposure in Migrant Children
Trauma exposure significantly impacts sleep in children. Nightmares are common. Evidence-based therapies are superior to medications but may not always be available in acute settings. No FDA-approved medications exist for the treatment of trauma-related sleep disturbances in youth. The evidence-base for the use of medications is largely based on case reports, retrospective chart reviews, clinical opinion, and adult studies. This evidence is reviewed for a number of medications, including prazosin, trazodone, alpha-2 agonists, quetiapine, and others. (Source: Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America)

Cortical hyperarousal in individuals with frequent nightmares
J Sleep Res. 2023 Sep 9:e14003. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNightmares are common among the general population and psychiatric patients and have been associated with signs of nocturnal arousal such as increased heart rate or increased high-frequency electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. However, it is still unclear, whether these characteristics are more of a trait occurring in people with frequent nightmares or rather indicators of the nightmare state. We compared participants with frequent nightmares (NM group; n = 30) and healthy controls (controls; n = 27) who spent 4 nights in the sleep lab...

Curr Neuropharmacol. 2023 Aug 1. doi: 10.2174/1570159X21666230801144328. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntidepressants are a commonly used, easily accessible, and overall safe treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in treating sleep disturbances in patients with PTSD. PubMed and the Cochrane Li- brary were searched (July 2022) for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the treatment of PTSD. Moreover, PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for individual trials investigating the antidepressant treatment of PTSD (up to ...

Does chronic pain influence our dreams?  A dream content analytical approach
AbstractBackgroundTo date, the relationship between frequent nightmares, chronic pain, waking-life distress and sleep quality is still unclear. Previous research has shown that chronic pain patients reported more frequent nightmares and critical life events compared to a  control group. Moreover, patients reported pain dreams similar to pain in their waking-life, whereas controls reported pain dreams sparsely.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to replicate these findings and to analyze the dream content of chronic pain patients in more detail.MethodsA  sample of chronic pain patients and healthy control individuals, matc...

Nightmares in borderline personality disorder - narrative review
CONCLUSION: Sleep disturbance and nightmares are common among individuals with BPD yet underrepresented in research. Nightmares have been linked with suicidality in other conditions (depression, PTSD) but only indirectly in BPD. More clinical studies are needed to explore the phenomenon further.PMID:37392443 (Source: Neuroendocrinology Letters)
