Efficacy of epidural esketamine on postoperative sleep quality after laparoscopic and robotic lower abdominal surgeries: a study protocol for randomised, double-blind, controlled trial
This study aims to explore the impact of both intraoperative and postoperative use of epidural esketamine on the postoperative sleep quality of patients undergoing minimally invasive lower abdominal surgeries. Methods and analysis This randomised, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial will be conducted at the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Centre. A total of 128 adults undergoing minimally invasive lower abdominal surgeries will be randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to either the esketamine group or the placebo group. In the esketamine group, epidural esketamine will be administered intraoperatively (0.2...

Factor Analysis and Validation of the Disturbing Dream and Nightmare Severity Index in an Inpatient Sample
CONCLUSIONS: The DDNSI was found to be a valid measure of nightmare frequency and distress, as it was significantly correlated with the items related to disturbing dreams, and the DDNSI was able to differentiate between nightmares and psychopathology symptoms. Though this research comes nearly two decades after the initial creation and use of the DDNSI, it provides a foundation for the scientific rigor of previous and future studies on nightmares using the DDNSI.PMID:38402579 | DOI:10.1080/15402002.2024.2319835 (Source: Behavioral Sleep Medicine)

A prospective study of nightmare disorder among Chinese adults in Hong Kong: Persistence and mental health outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides first empirical data showing that nightmare disorder could be persistent over time. Nightmare disorder symptoms are associated not only with PTSD symptoms but also with a broader range of mental health issues. This study points to the public health importance of identifying and managing nightmare disorder symptoms in the community. Additionally, the presence of nightmare disorder symptoms may be a helpful indicator for identifying post-traumatic stress.PMID:38369868 | DOI:10.1080/15402002.2024.2318264 (Source: Behavioral Sleep Medicine)

Nightmare frequency is a risk factor for suicidal ideation during the COVID-19 pandemic
This study aimed to investigate changes in NMF, SI, and their association during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected in 16 countries using a harmonised questionnaire. The sample included 9328 individuals (4848 women; age M[SD] = 46.85 [17.75] years), and 17.60% reported previous COVID-19. Overall, SI was significantly 2% lower during the pandemic vs. before, and this was consistent across genders and ages. Most countries/regions demonstrated decreases in SI during this pandemic, with Austria (-9.57%), Sweden (-6.18%), and Bulgaria (-5.14%) exhibiting significant declines in SI, but Italy (1.45%) and Portugal (2.45%)...
