Impact of Bifidobacterium longum BB536 on nausea caused by pirfenidone in a mouse model of pellagra
Conclusions: The utility of BB536 in pirfenidone-related pellagra from the viewpoint of reducing AEs was indicated. Importantly, further research is needed prior to clinical use of BB536 because its safety has not yet been evaluated in patients with IPF. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Low micronutrient intake in nursing home residents, a cross-sectional study
Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, Ahead of Print. Low intake of micronutrients is associated with health-related problems in nursing home residents. As their food intake is generally low, it is expected that their micronutrient intake will be low as well. The nutrient intake of 189 residents (mean age 85.0 years (SD: 7.4)) in five different Dutch nursing homes was measured based on 3-day direct observations of intake. Micronutrient intake, without supplementation, was calculated using the Dutch food composition table, and SPADE software was used to model habitual intake. Intake was compared to the estimated av...

Tragacanth gum-based nano-nutraceuticals synthesis by encapsulation of beetroot juice and Ocimum basilicum leaves for micronutrient deficient population
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Oct 18:127502. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127502. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicronutrient deficiencies, such as iron, folic acid, and vitamins C and D, are currently prevalent due to inadequate consumption of natural food sources, namely raw vegetables and fruits. This deficiency is compounded by the growing reliance on synthetic nutraceuticals and processed food, which exhibit poor absorbency within the gastrointestinal tract. Scientific studies consistently indicate that naturally prepared whole foods are superior in terms of nutrient absorption compared to processed and synthetic suppleme...

Oxidized phospholipids in cardiovascular disease
Nat Rev Cardiol. 2023 Oct 17. doi: 10.1038/s41569-023-00937-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProlonged or excessive exposure to oxidized phospholipids (OxPLs) generates chronic inflammation. OxPLs are present in atherosclerotic lesions and can be detected in plasma on apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins. When initially conceptualized, OxPL-apoB measurement in plasma was expected to reflect the concentration of minimally oxidized LDL, but, surprisingly, it correlated more strongly with plasma lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) levels. Indeed, experimental and clinical studies show that Lp(a) particles carry the largest frac...

Lipid-lowering therapies for cardiovascular disease prevention and management in primary care: PEER umbrella systematic review of systematic reviews
CONCLUSION: Statins have the most consistent evidence for the prevention of cardiovascular complications with a relative risk reduction of about 25% for MACE and 10% to 15% for mortality. The addition of ezetimibe, a PCSK9 inhibitor, or eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester to a statin provides additional MACE risk reduction but has no effect on all-cause mortality.PMID:37833094 | DOI:10.46747/cfp.6910701 (Source: Canadian Family Physician Medecin de Famille Canadien)
