JACR Redefines Radiology Health Care Delivery in Tandem With Patients
In a first, a special issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR®) explores radiology patient engagement from the patient perspective. Original articles provide valuable insights to help radiologists make the care they provide more patient-centered. “This issue is a first for the Journal of the American College of Radiology: Patients, caregivers and advocates serve as co-authors or reviewers, in other words, co-producers of meaningful content,” said James V. Rawson, MD, FACR, chair of the American College of Radiology (ACR) Commission on Patient- and Family-Centered Care. “Radiologists ar...

Radiology and Participatory Medicine
Before I got involved with the American College of Radiology (ACR), the only radiologist I knew well became a radiologist so he didn’t have to speak with patients. In my own considerable imaging experiences as a patient, I don’t think I ever talked with a radiologist. So, my first reaction to patient- and family-centered care (PFCC) for radiologists was to assume it was some sort of oxymoron. Then came my second thought: that if radiologists can engage in effective participatory medicine, anyone can. As an interested observer of advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), I also assumed it was only a matter of time befor...

When Doctors and Patients Don ’ t Speak The Same Language
Heather Hanson Life is about connections.  Our family, social, work and online connections make us happier and healthier.  The outcomes of trials hinge on connections. I work with my clients on ways to connect with the jury, because without that connection we’re unlikely to win the case.  Medicine is probably the profession most dependent on connections.  The patient and the healthcare team are just that–a team. If they don’t communicate in such a way that they understand each other and form a strong relationship, the health of the team suffers. But how do you forge connections when you don’t speak the same...

Why I Joined S4PM – Christine Bienvenu – Switzerland
Christine Bienvenu I started becoming an ePatient in 2008 when we were looking for a diagnosis for my eldest son (Aspergers Syndrome) and when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 35 in 2010. I naturally empowered myself to better understand and deal my new health reality. Researching my illness online I realised that French-speaking Switzerland had no breast cancer community and so through Facebook and Twitter I created Seinplement Romand(e)s, the breast cancer community I would have liked to find when I was diagnosed. Becoming an ePatient and then spreading awareness about it was not and is not an easy feat in pate...

Vanessa Carter – South Africa Why I Joined SPM
I originally became a member of the Society for Participatory Medicine because I was curious to learn about global research for e-patients and e-health. The society promotes a diverse and inclusive culture which is critical to sustainable health IT system development (SDG3). They provide a safe platform for patients to network between each other, however all stakeholders including high-level providers and others participate equally. They have several ongoing projects to promote idea sharing and P2P support for members. I often find that these ideas help to answer many of the difficult questions I have relating to my own he...

Why I joined SPM from Arnab Paul of India
I joined SPM because I like being a part of anything to do with patient engagement and Empowerment, and really want to be a part of this movement and wish to do something similar like this in India, me and Mayank have exchanged couple of emails but it didn’t fructify because of us being only two from india, i suppose. I came to know about SPM from GOOGLE, though I would say Mark Reifsteck was the one who nudged me into getting a  full SPM membership. (Source: Society for Participatory Medicine)
