Participants: Peter Elias, John Grohol, Janice McCallum, Danny Sands, Joe Ternullo, Sue Woods Minutes from August 14 meeting (Janice) approved Learning Exchange (Sarah) September Learning Exchange was held earlier on the day of this Executive Committee meeting. Webinar was excellent, but attendance was low. Timing of the promotions in late August likely played a role. Also, there were some negative comments about the registration process, which required a company name. Patients who don’t work for a company may find this off-putting. Also, when clicking the Webex link to attend webinar, it required registering again. ...

Patient Engagement – Careful What You Wish For
I’m often asked about my take on patient engagement. These buzzwords are losing their meaning. Frankly, I find myself at a loss to answer, even though I say patient engagement is my passion. Engagement from whose point of view? A person engaged in their own health – Isn’t everyone engaged in their own health? My symptoms affect me. I’m in pain. I can’t function as I’d like to. I’m sad. I’m anxious. I react. I manage or I don’t. I can accept, deny, adapt. I suffer, I advocate, I overcome. Maybe it’s my parent’s health or my partner’s or my child’...

Executive Committee Meetings, July 10, 2018
Discussion centered on confusion that might occur if parallel conversations take place in the original board community and a more open forum as a result of replicating content to make it available more broadly. Another potential issue: members could copy & paste or do screenshots and share outside the SPM community. We’ll have to have a clear code of conduct for SPM Connect if we open the board discussions to all members. Sue summed up the discussion: two decision points: 1) Yes/No go forward and 2) how to handle the archive, which may include some sensitive information. Other issues: etiquette –need someon...

It is impossible to capture all the insights and perspectives of an 8 hour retreat in this article, but some of the highlights include the following. Freshest in everyone’s mind was the i...

OPEN ACCESS REFERENCES: Fall ‘17
Conclusions: Nearly 1 out of 8 parents presenting to an urban pediatric ED reported using the Internet in the 24 hours prior to the ED visit. Among privately insured, at least one in 5 parents reported using the Internet prior to visiting the ED. Web-based medical information often influences decision making regarding ED utilization. Pediatric providers should provide parents with recommendations for high-quality sources of health information available on the Internet.
