Invite New Members
Dear Friends, It’s an important time for Participatory Medicine and for the Society.  We would like to ask you to help us boost our membership roles by asking two of your colleagues to join the Society this year for a low membership fee of $30.00. As you know, the Society for Participatory Medicine is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization devoted  participatory medicine, a movement where patients and providers work together collaboratively and shift patients from being mere passengers to responsible drivers of their health. This involves transparency of health information, open communication, shared decision-mak...

Patient, Doctor, and the Data: Emergence of the Third Player
The conventional model of medicine had only two players. The doctor alone had access to all medical information and his encounter with the patient was the only way to obtain health-related information. The dawn of the information age led to a change in the dynamics in this relationship. A consumerist model of healthcare has emerged where doctors partner with patients in managing the patient’s illness. The advances in systems biology, big data and consumer health care electronics will add patient data as a new element to the patient-physician interface. In the next decade, individual patients will generate billions of da...

Renaissance in Health Care: A Personal Perspective
Charlotte Sweeney I have experience as a physician, a patient, and a caregiver. I am a medical doctor—a surgeon in obstetrics and gynecology. In a hospital where I had practiced, I became a patient. Because of a missed diagnosis, instead of being treated with medications, my treatment resulted in major abdominal surgeries. I am currently the caregiver of another adult member of my family. My experiences give me unique perspectives.  I am able to see things through multiple lenses, so I re-focused my calling after retiring from practicing clinical medicine to serve as a patient and family advisor. I educate and advocate ...

Saving Our Doctors and Ourselves
Heather Hansen “This case is killing me.” I cannot tell you how many times I have heard those five words.  I defend doctors when they are sued for negligence.  I am a medical malpractice defense attorney, but attorneys are also called “counsel.” Most of my time is spent counseling.  Medical malpractice cases are made up of allegations, and sometimes the allegations are true. More often, in my experience, they’re not. Either way these cases make doctors doubt themselves, their patients, and the health care system. Sometimes doctors know they made a mistake. This is a good time to remember—we a...

Healing Moral Injury in Health Care
Mental health disorders are in vogue, and by that I mean our society pays a lot of attention to quantifying and identifying the social and mental dysfunctions of modern life. It is my belief that most mental health conditions represent ancient helpful survival mechanisms that have become dysfunctional because they clash with modern social systems. Violent trauma often leads to post traumatic stress disorder. Bipolar individuals might just have a physiologically heightened sensitivity to the fact that modern life is absurd and maddening. The morally injured feel genuinely betrayed and guilty. Moral injury (MI) is largely ig...

From Our Guest Editor
Jesse Eastes Season’s greetings, December is especially blessed this year as on Sunday the 25th we get to experience Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah on the same day. There are five weekends and every holiday falls on one. So unusual has our year been that the Cubs won the world series, England had Brexit, and the United States has changed forever. This is a great time to spend with family, reflect on the past, and contemplate the future. I congratulate all of you for this past year’s achievements and progress. I look forward to the new year in which I believe great strides will be made towards re...

From The SPM President
Hi all, While November brings a time of momentous change in our country, on a much smaller scale, I want to mark some notable events the Society can feel good about and celebrate! The Board approved a new technology platform to simplify and improve the member-experience, such as by making it easier for members to find archived conversations on the List-serv. Much appreciation goes to Tracy Zervakis, Peter Elias, and Dave deBronkart for spearheading this work. Now the fun begins – to start planning and implementing the new platform for use in 2017. Another initiative, the Learning Exchange, marked a milestone with its ...
