Burst of brain activity during dying could explain life passing before your eyes
Many people who have come close to death or have been resuscitated report a similar experience: Their lives flash before their eyes, memorable moments replay, and they may undergo an out-of-body experience, sensing they’re looking at themselves from elsewhere in the room. Now, a small study mapping the brain activity of four people while they were dying shows a burst of activity in their brains after their hearts stop. The authors say the finding, published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , may explain how a person’s brain could replay conscious memories even after...

Judge dismisses claim that institute defamed David Sabatini in harassment case
A sexual harassment case that has roiled multiple research institutions took another turn last week when a Massachusetts superior court judge threw out most claims made by biologist David Sabatini against the Whitehead Institute and its president and director Ruth Lehmann in a 2021 defamation lawsuit . But Judge Hélène Kazanjian in a 30 March ruling declined to dismiss what Sabatini called the most important one, alleging workplace discrimination. She also declined to dismiss several of Sabatini’s claims against Kristin Knouse, a biologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), wh...

Geneticists should rethink how they use race and ethnicity, panel urges
The once widely held notion that humans fall into discrete races has led to geneticists drawing erroneous conclusions about the role of genes in shaping health and traits, and in some cases, to harmful discrimination against some groups. An expert committee is now urging an overhaul of this practice. Most notably, the committee’s report calls for researchers to scrap the term “race” itself in most studies, use caution with other labels such as ethnicity and geography, and determine ancestry by quantifying how closely a group’s members are related to reference genomes drawn from certain populations. “We’re...

Structural differences among children, adolescents, and adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and abnormal Granger causality of the right pallidum and whole-brain
This study investigated structural and effective connectivity differences through voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and Granger causality analysis (GCA) across child, adolescent, and adult ADHD patients. Structural and functional MRI data consisting of 35 children (8.64 ± 0.81 years), 40 adolescents (14.11 ± 1.83 years), and 39 adults (31.59 ± 10.13 years) was obtained from New York University Child Study Center for the ADHD-200 and UCLA dataset. Structural differences in the bilateral pallidum, bilateral thalamus, bilateral insula, superior temporal cortex, and the right cerebellum were observed among the three ADHD groups...
