Development and implementation of an Enhanced Recovery After Cranial Surgery pathway following supratentorial tumor resection at a tertiary care center
CONCLUSIONS: Patients in the ERACS pathway cohort experienced reduced LOS and ICU utilization, with similar rates of adverse outcomes compared to standard pathway patients. The authors' initial experience suggests that an accelerated recovery pathway can be safely implemented following supratentorial tumor resection in select patients.PMID:38039535 | DOI:10.3171/2023.9.FOCUS23552 (Source: Neurosurgical Focus)

Green gastroenterology adaptation, resilience and an industry perspective
We are living in unprecedented times—extreme weather conditions are becoming increasingly common, and greenhouse gas emissions have reached staggering levels. We are in a climate crisis, and it is up to every government, institution, industry and individual to act now. Climate change poses a serious threat to the healthcare industry, threatening facility closures, supply chain disruptions and the rapid spreading of diseases and traumatic events,1–3 as seen in 2012, when Atlantic Hurricane Sandy impacted eight countries including the eastern USA (particularly the states of New York and New Jersey). New York Univ...

Global tendencies and frontier topics in hemodynamics research of intracranial aneurysms: a bibliometric analysis from 1999 to 2022
Conclusion: This study drew a knowledge map of the top countries, institutions, authors, publications, and journals on IA hemodynamics over the past 2 decades. The current and future hotspots of IA hemodynamics mainly include hemodynamics itself (4D flow MRI), its relationship with IA rupture (morphology and prediction), and its relationship with IA treatment (flow diverters, complications, and recanalization). Despite sexual harassment shadow, biologist David Sabatini lands job at top Czech institute
David Sabatini, the high-flying biologist who lost positions at three prominent U.S. institutions after breaching sexual misconduct policies, last month began a new job as a senior scientist at the Institute for Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry Prague (IOCB), a powerful arm of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The hire has divided Czech scientists and is likely to ignite debate about whether and when institutions should give second chances to those who commit sexual misconduct. “I am very honored to join IOCB and excited to be able to again mentor younger scientists, contribute to biological research, and participat...

As student and postdoc unions proliferate, academia is scrambling to adapt
After months of tense negotiations and a barely averted strike, this week postdocs and associate researchers at Columbia University agreed to a contract that will boost their minimum salary by $10,000, to $70,000, and provide other benefits, including a $5000 child care allowance. Credit goes to their labor union, which formed in 2018, says Elsy El Khoury, a chemistry postdoc and a union organizing committee member. “We got to where we got because we were ready to strike.” It’s one of the latest developments in a rising tide of campus labor organizing efforts across the country—a tide that’s forcing the aca...

"So, We Found a Way:" How Changing Modalities Affected a Year-Long Mentored Research Experience for Associate's Degree Students
CBE Life Sci Educ. 2023 Dec;22(4):ar49. doi: 10.1187/cbe.21-09-0278.ABSTRACTThe CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP) has provided year-long mentored research experiences for 1678 associate's degree STEM students since 2014. The pluralities (32%) of mentors, all of whom are full-time faculty, have been biologists. Other represented disciplines include, but are not limited to, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, environmental science, linguistics, and psychology. The research experiences take place at all 10 associate's degree-granting colleges within the City University of New York system. Our previous assessment demonstr...
