Macular hypoplasia and high myopia in 48, xxyy syndrome: a unique case of 48, xxyy syndrome that presents with high myopia and macular dysplasia
Among sex chromosome aneuploidies, 48, XXYY syndrome is a rare variant. This condition is marked by the existence of an additional X and Y chromosome in males, leading to a diverse range of physical, neurocogn... (Source: BMC Ophthalmology)

Myopia and Rate of Peripapillary Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness in Diabetic Patients Without Retinopathy: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study
CONCLUSIONS: The diabetes group showed a faster rate of average pRNFL thickness reduction compared to healthy controls, regardless of the presence of myopia. The average pRNFL thickness decreased more rapidly when diabetes and myopia were present simultaneously than in the individual diabetes or myopia group. Both diabetes and myopia were associated with accelerated pRNFL loss.PMID:38647053 | DOI:10.1080/02713683.2024.2327087 (Source: Current Eye Research)

The Role of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Glaucoma
Semin Ophthalmol. 2024 Apr 20:1-12. doi: 10.1080/08820538.2024.2343049. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and comprises a group of chronic optic neuropathies characterized by progressive retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss. Various etiologies, including impaired blood supply to the optic nerve, have been implicated for glaucoma pathogenesis. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive imaging modality for visualizing the ophthalmic microvasculature. Using blood flow as an intrinsic contrast agent, it distinguishes blood vessels from the surrounding ti...

Targeting MicroRNA in Myopia: Current Insights
Exp Eye Res. 2024 Apr 18:109905. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2024.109905. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMyopia, the most prevalent eye condition, has sparked notable interest regarding its origin and prevention. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, non-coding RNA strands typically consisting of 18-24 nucleotides. They play a central role in post-transcriptional gene regulation and are closely associated with both normal and pathological processes in organisms. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics have provided novel insights into miRNA expression and its regulatory role in myopia. This review discusses the dis...

Visual functions, ocular characteristics and visual quality of life in patients with homocystinuria
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of myopia, ectopia lentis and monocular blindness was high in HCU-patients, which was reflected in their visual quality of life. Diagnosis was often delayed after the first ocular manifestation, increasing the risk of other severe non-ocular complications.PMID:38629455 | DOI:10.1080/13816810.2024.2339959 (Source: Ophthalmic Genetics)

Effectiveness of repeated low-level red light in myopia prevention and myopia control
CONCLUSION: RLRL effectively delayed myopia progression in children with myopia and reduced the incidence of myopia in premyopic children. Moreover, RLRL exhibited a stronger impact on myopic children compared with premyopic individuals.PMID:38631861 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324260 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)
