Visual functions, ocular characteristics and visual quality of life in patients with homocystinuria
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of myopia, ectopia lentis and monocular blindness was high in HCU-patients, which was reflected in their visual quality of life. Diagnosis was often delayed after the first ocular manifestation, increasing the risk of other severe non-ocular complications.PMID:38629455 | DOI:10.1080/13816810.2024.2339959 (Source: Ophthalmic Genetics)

Effectiveness of repeated low-level red light in myopia prevention and myopia control
CONCLUSION: RLRL effectively delayed myopia progression in children with myopia and reduced the incidence of myopia in premyopic children. Moreover, RLRL exhibited a stronger impact on myopic children compared with premyopic individuals.PMID:38631861 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324260 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

The relationship between accommodation, binocular function and myopia progression in myopic children wearing orthokeratology lenses
To determine the relationship between changes in accommodative and binocular function with myopia progression in myopic children over a two-year follow-up period, and to determine when changes in visual functions stabilized after switching from spectacles to orthokeratology (Ortho-K). Morphology and thickness of corneal endothelial cells in young Sudanese individuals with myopia
This study aimed to evaluate corneal endothelial cell morphology and central corneal thickness in young individuals with myopia. A prospective study was conducted at Al-Neelain University Eye Hospital between January 2019 and January 2020, including 160 patients with myopia (320 eyes). Data was gathered through clinical assessment of visual acuity, refractive error, and corneal endothelial cells. Results showed that 60% of participants with myopia were female, with a mean age of 21.99±2.8 years and a mean equivalent sphere of -3.19±2.67D. There was a significant difference in endothelial cell degeneration between myopia ...

Mutual Aid as Effective Altruism
Kennedy Inst Ethics J. 2023;33(2):201-226. doi: 10.1353/ken.2023.a904083.ABSTRACTEffective altruism has a strategy problem. Overreliance on a strategy of donating to the most effective charities keeps us on the firefighter's treadmill, continually pursuing the next-highest quantifiable marginal gain. But on its own, this is politically shortsighted. Without any long-term framework within which these individual rescues fit together to bring about the greatest overall impact, we are almost certainly leaving a lot of value on the table. Thus, effective altruists' preferred means undercut their professed aims. Alongside the ch...
