Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection of Abdominal Wall after Lipoabdominoplasty: Complication following Medical Tourism
We present a case study of a 48-year-old woman diagnosed with NSTI of the abdominal wall following liposuction, abdominoplasty, and ventral hernia repair performed in Latin America. In the operating room, bowel perforation at the hepatic flexure was observed requiring emergent fascial debridement, bowel resection, and broad-spectrum antibiotics. She required multiple washouts and split-thickness skin grafts. Complications such as NSTI are possible after lipoabdominoplasty and are prevalent in cosmetic medical tourism, due, in part, to varying institutional standards and accreditations, and in some cases lack of consistent ...

Incidental Detection of Hemoglobin Variants During Evaluation of HbA1c
Indian J Clin Biochem. 2022 Apr;37(2):242-246. doi: 10.1007/s12291-020-00936-z. Epub 2021 Jan 21.ABSTRACTHemoglobinA1c (HbA1c) is used to diagnose Diabetes mellitus and monitor glycemic control over the previous eight to twelve weeks in diabetic patients. Detection of HbA1c by cation exchange-high performance liquid chromatography (CE-HPLC) gives a chromatogram by which abnormal hemoglobin variants are also picked up. Some of these may interfere with HbA1c values affecting clinical management. Due to increased inter-state migration as well as medical tourism, there is a high possibility of finding various hemoglobin varian...

Hair transplantation-sustainably planned and performed by the physician
CONCLUSIONS: Since hair transplantation requires a precise sequence of surgical steps and careful handling of the tiny grafts, the skills and experience of the hair surgeon and his or her team are crucial. The medical risks of an assembly-line way of performing this surgery by non-licensed, non-physician staff, as reported from national clinics and medical tourism, should not be underestimated. The German Association of Hair Surgeons and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery offer patient information, as well as continuous medical education and guidelines for interested physicians to ensure the highest qual...

Extensively Drug-Resistant Carbapenemase-Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Medical Tourism from the United States to Mexico, 2018-2019
Emerg Infect Dis. 2022 Jan;28(1):51-61. doi: 10.3201/eid2801.211880.ABSTRACTCarbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) producing the Verona integron‒encoded metallo-β-lactamase (VIM) are highly antimicrobial drug-resistant pathogens that are uncommon in the United States. We investigated the source of VIM-CRPA among US medical tourists who underwent bariatric surgery in Tijuana, Mexico. Cases were defined as isolation of VIM-CRPA or CRPA from a patient who had an elective invasive medical procedure in Mexico during January 2018‒December 2019 and within 45 days before specimen collection. Whole-genome sequencin...
