Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 1451: Effects of Forest Fragmentation on Connectivity and Genetic Diversity in an Endemic and an Invasive Rodent in Northwestern Madagascar
In this study, we examined the dispersal and connectivity patterns of rodents, one endemic (Eliurus myoxinus) and one invasive (Rattus rattus), in two landscapes containing forest fragments and adjacent continuous forest patches in northwestern Madagascar. We generated genetic (RADseq) data for 66 E. myoxinus and 81 R. rattus individuals to evaluate differences in genetic diversity as well as inbreeding and connectivity in two landscapes. We found higher levels of inbreeding and lower levels of genetic diversity in E. myoxinus compared with R. rattus. We observed related dyads both within and between habitat patches and po...

An assessment of four decades atmospheric PM2.5 trends in urban locations over Southern Africa using MERRA-2 reanalysis
AbstractExcess concentration of aerosols with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) in atmosphere has significant implications to both climate and human health. For the first time, this study estimated four decades (1980 –2021) trends of PM2.5 in urban locations across Southern Africa using the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2) aerosol simulations. The findings show that the highest PM2.5 is recorded during the peak of biomass burning, September-October-November (SON season) in locations selected over Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Botswana, Na...

Thermal desorption direct analysis in real ‐time high‐resolution mass spectrometry and machine learning allow the rapid authentication of ground black pepper and dried oregano: A proof‐of‐concept study
In this study, TD-DART-HRMS's utility for establishing spice authenticity was examined. To this aim, we directly analyzed authentic (typical) and adulterated (atypical) samples of ground black pepper and dried oregano in positive and negative ion modes. We analyzed a set of authentic ground black pepper samples (n = 14) originating from Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Ecuador, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Cambodia, and adulterated samples (n = 25) consisting of mixtures of ground black pepper with this spice's nonfunctional by-products (pinheads or spent) or with different exogenous materials (olive kernel, green...

Home stimulation, development, and nutritional status of children under 2  years of age in the highlands of Madagascar
CONCLUSIONS: The very high stunting rates and very low performance on cognitive, motor, language, and socioemotional development assessments of children in the Vakinankaratra region require urgent attention.PMID:37386492 | PMC:PMC10308626 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-023-00399-x (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)
