Buschke-Lowenstein Tumors: A Review and Proposed Classification System
Buschke-Lowenstein (B-L) tumors or giant condylomata are large fungating lesions that are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and develop in the anogenital region. Although uncommon, physicians and surgeons who treat sexually transmitted diseases or other diseases involving the anogenital area will encounter these patients. The purpose of this study is to review the current literature regarding these lesions. We evaluated every published study in PubMed and Embase from 1925 to 2020, concentrating on the clinical data included in each report, such as presentation and treatment. We also evaluated each work for any definitio...

Barriers to and Facilitators of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Among People Aged 9 to 26 Years: A Systematic Review
Conclusions After their introduction 14 years ago, knowledge deficiency of the HPV vaccine is still a critical barrier to vaccination. Educational initiatives aimed at adolescents and young adults were urgently needed. Understanding factors that arbitrate in early HPV vaccination is critical for improving the HPV vaccination rate. An Updated Systematic Review of Human Papillomavirus Genotype Distribution by Cervical Disease Grade in Women Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Highlights Limited Findings From Latin America
Cervical cancer is 5 times more likely among women living with human immunodeficiency virus (WHIV), likely due to higher prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV). Despite evidence of higher rates with multiple HPV genotypes in WHIV, there are no recommendations for triage by HPV genotyping specific to WHIV. In Latin America/Caribbean rates are high and vary significantly. To guide optimization of HPV-based cervical cancer screening among WHIV in Latin America/Caribbean, review of current literature was completed to assess HPV genotype distribution by cervical disease grade in WHIV in this region; and further expanded globa...

Data on Safety of Intravaginal Boric Acid Use in Pregnant and Nonpregnant Women: A Narrative Review
Intravaginal boric acid (IBA) represents one of the only options available to treat azole-resistant vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) and is included as part of multiple national guidelines (including the United Kingdom and the United States) for the treatment of VVC or recurrent bacterial vaginosis. Novel products using IBA are under development for treatment and suppression of VVC and bacterial vaginosis. Use of over-the-counter or clinician-prescribed IBA in reproductive-aged women is already widespread and may increase further if drug resistance in VVC rises. However, IBA is not a Food and Drug Administration–approved d...

Sexually Transmitted Infection Epidemiology and Care in Rural Areas: A Narrative Review
Conclusions Sexually transmitted infection in rural areas is significant in scope and facing diminished prevention opportunities and resources. Although many STI interventions have been developed and piloted, few have been tested to scale or operationalized in rural areas. By considering rural STI risk reduction within a holistic model, purposeful exploration of interventions tailored to rural environments may be explored. (Source: Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

Reported Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Are Decreasing Among Young Black Women: Good News or Bad News? A Narrative Review
We examined whether trends in reported rates reflected changing prevalence or changing screening. We analyzed trends in reported chlamydia and gonorrhea rates from 2010 to 2018 among women in the United States aged 15 to 39 years by age and race/ethnicity subgroup, state, and reporting source. Most jurisdictions reported decreased chlamydia and gonorrhea rates among Black teens and increased rates among White teens and older women. Between 2010 and 2018, public clinics reported fewer cases, especially among young Black women, that were not restored by increases elsewhere. We reviewed literature on trends in screening, prev...

Rectal Chlamydia trachomatis Infection: A Narrative Review of the State of the Science and Research Priorities
Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is the most commonly reported infection in the United States. Most chlamydial research to date has focused on urogenital infection, but a growing body of research has demonstrated that rectal chlamydia is a relatively common infection among clinic-attending men and women. We know that most rectal CT infections are asymptomatic, but the health implications of these infections, particularly for women, are unclear. In addition, there are key knowledge gaps related to the epidemiologic parameters of rectal chlamydia, the routes of acquisition, the duration of infection, and the clinical significance ...

Pooled 3-Anatomic-Site Testing for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions We found that pooled 3-anatomic-site tests performed similarly to single-anatomic-site tests for the detection of CT and NG. The pooled 3-anatomic-site tests have the added potential benefit of reduced cost and resource requirement, which could lead to improved testing access and screening uptake. Oral Manifestations of Early Syphilis in Adults: A Systematic Review of Case Reports and Series
Rapid emergence of syphilis and oral sexual behaviors has focused attention on oral syphilis, and published reports of cases with oral syphilis have increased in the recent decades. We performed a systematic literature review by searching articles from PubMed, EMBSE, and Google Scholar, looking for case reports or series that would potentially have the clinical characteristics and outcomes for each individual case with oral syphilis. A total of 145 cases with the infection, from 95 studies, were identified to include in our review. Two main clinical phenotypes (ulcerative lesions and mucous patches) appeared to be of parti...

Medicaid Expansion and Rates of Reportable Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United States: A County-Level Analysis
Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and primary/secondary syphilis rates in 2018 were significantly higher in counties located in states without Medicaid expansion compared with those with Medicaid expansion. For sexually transmitted infections combined, 59.9% of counties without Medicaid expansion were in the highest 2 sexually transmitted infection rate quartiles compared with 42.2% of counties with Medicaid expansion (P (Source: Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

Burden of Mycoplasma genitalium and Bacterial Coinfections in a Population-Based Sample in New Mexico
In this population-based US study, the overall prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium was 1.95% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.62%–2.34%), declining from 6.12% (95% CI, 4.72%–7.92%) in women aged 21 to 24 years to 0.48% (95% CI, 0.25%–0.94%) in women aged 40 to 64 years. The prevalence of coinfections with Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis was low. (Source: Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

The Use of Intracranial Vessel Wall Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Detect a Presumptive Syphilitic Brain Aneurysm
Syphilitic intracranial aneurysm is a rare presentation of meningovascular syphilis in developed countries. In this case report, we discuss the utilization of the intracranial vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging in the management of a patient with a rare fusiform brain aneurysm, positive syphilis serologies, and inconclusive cerebrospinal fluid findings.
