Disseminated Gonorrhea Presenting as Liver Abscess in a Patient With Sickle Cell Disease
Infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a global health concern. Occasionally, gonococcal infections may disseminate and cause clinical syndromes, such as arthritis, tenosynovitis, and skin lesions. Here, we report a very rare presentation of a liver abscess due to N. gonorrhoeae in a 29-year-old woman with sickle cell disease without prior genitourinary complaints. The patient was successfully treated using drainage and antimicrobial therapy. Evaluation did not reveal any inherited defects in complement deficiency. It is possible that the underlying immune defects from sickle cell disease and unknown bacterial virule...

Self-Reported Use of HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Is Highly Accurate Among Sexual Health Clinic Patients in New York City
In New York City, 91% of sexually transmitted infection clinic patients reported preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use that matched the detection of PrEP in their serum. Self-report had 80% sensitivity and 96% specificity (κ = 0.79) compared with measured PrEP. Our findings suggest that self-report may be a valid indicator of PrEP uptake. Clinical and Epidemiological Characterization of Lymphogranuloma Venereum in a Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic in Lisbon, 2001 to 2020
Between 2001 and 2020, 54 LGV cases were diagnosed in a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Lisbon, most in men who have sex with men (87%), HIV negative (63%), from the anorectal mucosa (72.2%). High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Messenger RNA Testing Using Urine, Cervicovaginal Self-Collected and Provider-Collected Cervical Samples Among Women in Mombasa, Kenya
We compared human papillomavirus messenger RNA testing using urine, self-, and provider-collected samples for the detection of high-grade cervical cytology and assessed acceptability of urine self-collection among females who engage in sex work in Kenya. Participants found urine sampling comfortable, but high-risk human papillomavirus messenger RNA detection in urine samples was less likely to detect high-grade lesions than self- and provider-collected cervical samples. Feasibility, Acceptability, and Potential Cost-Effectiveness of a Novel Mobile Phone Intervention to Promote Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing Within Social Networks in Tanzania
Among 145 individuals surveyed in Tanzania, 42% indicated willingness to test for human immunodeficiency virus in response to a confidential, phone-based text message. On average, participants were likely to provide contact information for 1.5 members of their social networks, suggesting high feasibility and moderate acceptability of a novel mHealth human immunodeficiency virus testing intervention. Estimating Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Burden Among US Army Soldiers From Military Health System Data: Mind the Gap
Conclusion Integration of laboratory and medical encounter data substantially improved burden estimation over reporting alone. Rates generated remain conservative because they only reflect documented cases. Increasing rates support prevention prioritization, particularly among young soldiers. Sociodemographic Factors Associated With Gonorrhea and Chlamydia Infection in Pregnancy
Conclusions Several sociodemographic factors including young maternal age, low educational attainment, Medicaid insurance, and non-Hispanic Black race/ethnicity, are associated with a marked increase in the risk for gonorrheal and chlamydial infection in current US pregnancies. Chlamydia Vaccination: Parent Opinions and Implications for Future Promotion Programs
Conclusions Although parents think that chlamydia vaccines are needed, lack of awareness about infections and potential benefits of vaccination could serve as barriers to uptake. Healthcare provider recommendations can help to improve knowledge and vaccine uptake. However, there is a need for multilevel approaches to improve chlamydia awareness and ensure that vaccination initiation and completion rates remain high. (Source: Sexually Transmitted Diseases)
