Retrospective Cohort Study of the Incidence and Outcomes of Jarisch-Herxheimer Reactions After Treatment of Infectious Syphilis in Late Pregnancy
Of 39 pregnant women at ≥20 weeks' gestation treated with benzathine penicillin G for infectious syphilis, we identified only 2 mild Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions. There were no immediate fetal sequelae. Data from our study do not support the recommendation for routine admission for the treatment of infectious syphilis in late pregnancy. Reported Neurologic, Ocular, and Otic Manifestations Among Syphilis Cases—16 States, 2019
Conclusions Reported neurologic, ocular, and otic manifestation prevalence was low among syphilis cases, but these data are likely an underestimate given potential underreporting. Reported clinical manifestation frequency, including among HIV-negative persons, emphasizes the importance of evaluating all syphilis cases for signs/symptoms of neurosyphilis, ocular syphilis, and otosyphilis. Characterization of Patients Seeking Care at a Sexual Health Clinic Who Report Engaging in Exchange Sex
Background People who exchange sex (PWES) for money or drugs are at increased risk for poor health outcomes and may be reluctant to engage in health services. We analyzed demographics; sexually transmitted infections (STIs), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) history; and HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use,...

Get2PrEP: An Electronic Medical Record Laboratory Comment Increased Safe Sex Counseling But Not Preexposure Prophylaxis Services at a Large Urban Academic Medical Center in Northern Manhattan
Conclusions We demonstrated that an EMR laboratory comment had a modest effect on increasing risk reduction counseling, although not HIV screening or PrEP prescriptions. Future strategies to encourage provider delivery of sexual health services may benefit from more targeted strategies that combine behavioral and information technology approaches. Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Chlamydial Infection Treatment in Women Discharged From an Urban Safety-Net Emergency Unit
This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on treating CT-positive patients discharged from a safety-net women's emergency unit. Methods This was a preretrospective and postretrospective cohort study. Chlamydia trachomatis–positive female patients seen in the women's emergency unit were evaluated. Patients discharged in 2019, the “pre–COVID-19” group, and those discharged in 2020, the “COVID-19” group, were compared. The primary outcome was CT treatment within 30 days, and secondary outcomes included prescription dispensation, repeat tests taken, and expedited partner treatment. A subgroup of patients di...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae Isolates From Peru, 2018 and 2019
Conclusions This study demonstrated that in Peru, fluoroquinolones should not be recommended or used in N. gonorrhoeae infections due to the high percentage of resistant strains. In addition, nationwide access to gonococcal resistance testing, molecular diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship should be implemented to control the spread of gonococcal antimicrobial resistance.
