Ethical dilemmas of dental implantology: Ready for aftercare?
Gross, Dominik / Gross, Karin / Schmidt, MathiasPage 367 - 375Dental implantology is one of the most attractive and dynamic fields of work within clinical dentistry. It provides many patients with new and improved opportunities for stable (implant-supported) rehabilitation and also offers dentists a field that is interesting in both technical and economic terms. Adverse clinical outcomes are, however, often the subject of discussion. These relate both to prosthetic failure and to biologic complications and side effects, namely persistent infections surrounding implants. A further point of discussion relates to the question...

Is liberal independent dental practice in danger? Assessing forms of dental practice in the European Regional Organization (ERO) zone of the FDI World Dental Federation
Conclusions: Despite modern forms of dental practice, the charter of the individual liberal dental profession (CED et al, 2013) should be respected and taken into account on the basis of ethical principles. The commercialization of the dental profession can be neutralized only by establishing and following well-defined ethical principles; oral healthcare quality can thus be ensured without the influence of third parties. Biology of teeth and implants: The external environment, biology of structures, and clinical aspects
Eggert, F.-Michael / Levin, LiranPage 301 - 312For the past several thousand years, until development of the titanium dental implant, only a few missing teeth were replaced successfully in a very small number of individuals. Nowadays, placement of dental implants has become sufficiently commonplace that there is a need to interchange information between what we know about periodontal health and disease and what we know about health and disease involving dental implants. This review discusses the similarities and differences between teeth and dental implants with regards to anatomy, biology, physiology, and pathologic proce...

In-vivo performance of impedance spectroscopy, laser fluorescence, and bitewing radiographs for occlusal caries detection
Conclusion: All three methods were useful for detecting occlusal caries but bitewing radiography exhibited the best performance when compared with visual scoring. ACIS displayed the highest specificity and positive predictive value but the sensitivity was low and the clinical handling was less convenient. Further clinical studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effects of early caries detection on dental health. (Source: Quintessence International)

Obliteration after recurrent dental trauma in a 7-year-old patient: 4-year follow-up
Mourad, Mhd Said / Splieth, Christian H. / Alkilzy, MohammadPage 287 - 291Traumatic dental injuries are reported to have a high prevalence regardless of the region or the age group. Concussion injuries are considered as moderate, but very frequent injuries. They are associated with a wide spectrum of pulpal reactions. Pulp canal obliteration in spite of negative sensitivity proves ongoing pulp vitality. This case report presents multiple traumatic dental injuries in both maxillary central incisors with two different pulpal reactions during a follow-up period of 4 years in a healthy 7-year-old girl. The initial trauma with ...

Analysis of the causes of dental implant fracture: A retrospective clinical study
Conclusion: Occlusal overload due to bruxism or inappropriate or inadequate occlusion as a single factor or a combination of these factors during the first years after the functional load can cause implant fracture. Fracture of the implant body more frequently occurred with single crowns than with other implant-supported fixed dental prostheses. (Source: Quintessence International)

Performance and marginal bone level alteration around immediately loaded narrow-diameter implants. A prospective clinical study: Results after 1 year
Conclusion: According to the 1-year results of this prospective clinical study, NDIs seem to be a reliable alternative to support prostheses in edentulous patients with a reduced horizontal mandibular bone volume. (Source: Quintessence International)

Factors affecting ultrasonic removal of separated endodontic instruments: A retrospective clinical study
Conclusion: Microsonic removal is a successful method to retrieve separated instruments. The use of only one radiographic measurement technique is not sufficient to precisely evaluate root canal anatomy, case difficulty, and chance of successful removal before instrument removal on a periapical radiograph. Postoperative root canal fillings are mainly substandard. (Source: Quintessence International)

Decoronation of an ankylosed tooth: Postoperative restoration by means of an intermediate fixed orthodontic laboratory device
Einy, Shmuel / Kaufman, Arieh Y. / Yoshpe, Margarita / Philosoph, Nir / Aizenbud, Dror / Lin, ShaulPage 239 - 244Rehabilitation of missing decoronated permanent incisors in growing children and adolescents is a major challenge. The psychologic impact of the loss of an incisor is significant due to its immediate influence on facial appearance. Final restoration is planned only after skeletal growth cessation. Consequently, the fabrication and installation of an immediate temporary restoration, which is expected to remain in place for a long period, must meet the patient's esthetic demands and be durable in the oral environm...

Cross-sectional study on the prevalence of carotid artery calcifications, tonsilloliths, calcified submandibular lymph nodes, sialoliths of the submandibular gland, and idiopathic osteosclerosis using digital panoramic radiography in a Lower Austrian subpopulation
Conclusions: With a prevalence of 19.0% in the study population, calcifications observed on DPR are more spread than previously reported. Thus, with patients of increasing age, DPR should be regarded as an important tool for basic screening of suspicious calcifications necessitating further diagnostic assessments. Chronic non-suppurative mandibular osteomyelitis with proliferative periostitis: A review
Taihi, Ihs ène / Radoi, LoredanaPage 219 - 226Chronic non-suppurative osteomyelitis (CNSO) is a chronic bone disease and may be associated with a reparative periosteum entity called proliferative periostitis (PP). This condition rarely affects the maxillofacial region. Mandibular cases were already described for an infectious dental cause, often with an "onion skin" radiographic aspect, but some rare reported cases showed no obvious etiology. They represent a challenge for diagnosis because of possible misdiagnosis leading to unsuccessful or inappropriate treatment attempts. An uncommon case of mandibular CNSO associated ...
