Implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation of a senescent patient with Down syndrome
Conclusion: The lack, or inadequacy, of dental prostheses can impair the life quality of individuals in need of such restorations. Implant-supported dentures in combination with a bar construction improve the retention of prostheses in atrophied jaws. This form of restoration is also proving to be a successful therapy option for elderly persons with Down syndrome. (Source: Quintessence International)

Oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions: what's new?
This article presents therapies for dental practitioners who do not focus on treating patients with oral mucosa diseases. Oral lichenoid lesions, which are clinically and histologically similar, must be distinguished from oral lichen planus. Before starting therapy, it is necessary to differentiate between drug- and contact-related variants. Both clinical features have in common that according to the World Health Organization (2017) they belong to the class of potentially malignant disorders. Accordingly, these patients must be referred to a regular, and in oral lichen planus patients, lifelong, recall. (Source: Quintessence International)

Tongue-tied: a case of magnetic balls constricting the lingual frenum
Merbold, Karl-Heinz / Buchanan, Glynn Dale / Gamieldien, Mohamed YasinPage 152 - 154The health risks associated with aspiration and ingestion of foreign bodies in children are well known. The increased availability of magnetic toys have added to these risks. A 7-year-old girl presented at the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery at the University of Pretoria Oral and Dental Hospital with a complaint of pain under the tongue. Examination revealed that magnetic balls had been lodged on either side of the lingual frenum. The patient experienced pain and was unable to dislodge the magnets. This case report documents pa...

Mechanical stress during implant surgery and its effects on marginal bone: a literature review
Conclusion: Clinicians should be cautious during implant surgery not to overstress bone. Future implant systems should focus on optimized drill protocols and apply macrodesigns that also derive stability from trabecular bone as well, instead of merely compressing the cortical layer. Local and systemic factors associated with marginal bone loss around dental implants: a retrospective clinical study
G üven, Selda Şule / Cabbar, Fatih / Güler, NurhanPage 128 - 141Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of patient-related systemic factors, local bone and intraoral factors, and implant-related factors on peri-implant marginal bone loss (MBL).Method and materials: The following data were collected from patients who received dental implants and were recalled for examinations at least 3 years after treatment completion: medical history, age, sex, habits, periodontal health, implant size and surface, surgical procedure, prosthesis type, implant failure, Plaque Index, and oral hygiene. Effects of implant-related variables on the marginal bone loss around dental implants
Dereci, Ömür / Mumcu, Emre / Dereci, Olgu Nur / Dayan, Süleyman Çağatay / Koşar, Yasin Çağlar / Fadhil, Sadeq Mohammed TaqiPage 118 - 126Objective: Marginal bone loss (MBL), a prognostic parameter for implant success, is associated with implant- and patient-related variables. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of the crown-to-implant ratio and independent factors of implant diameter, implant length, implant type, location, and platform switching on distal and mesial MBLs at the 6-, 12-, 24-, and 36-month recall sessions of single crown implant-supported restorations.Method and materials: Radiograp...

Association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and the evolution of endodontic pathology
Conclusions: The present systematic review suggests that there are biologic bases to suggest that type 2 DM may act as a risk factor for developing an endodontic pathology, affecting the course of the disease in terms of susceptibility, prevalence, progression, and tissue healing capacity as a consequence of a disrupted immune response. However, more well-designed clinical investigations carrying out suitable research methodologies are needed to elucidate the influence of type 2 DM on the pulpal and periapical disease evolution. Myofascial pain with referral from the anterior digastric muscle mimicking a toothache in the mandibular anterior teeth: a case report
Conclusion: Non-odontogenic toothaches may be multifactorial. The case presented emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive evaluation to differentiate odontogenic pain from non-odontogenic pain. Irreversible dental procedures should be instituted after an accurate diagnosis and multidisciplinary management may be required in complex cases. (Source: Quintessence International)

Primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of mandible masquerading as a toothache
Fatahzadeh, MahnazPage 50 - 55Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is an aggressive, fast-growing form of non-Hodgkin disease with rare manifestation in mandible as a primary site. Absence of pathognomonic features in this localization often leads to misdiagnosis as an odontogenic process or its delayed diagnosis. The present case report is of a patient in whom non-odontogenic jaw pain mimicked a toothache prompting multiple dental interventions before persistence of pain and atypical findings led to consideration of a primary malignant etiology.
