Esthetic treatment of alveolar ridge atrophy in the anterior maxilla via connective tissue graft performed simultaneously with implant placement: A three-case series
Conclusion: Although the approach described in this report requires further investigation, it will likely lead to good results when used to treat a lack of pink volume in the most important esthetic area. (Source: Quintessence International)

Single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses as an alternative to orthodontic space closure (and to single-tooth implants)
This article describes single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) as an excellent alternative to orthodontic space closure or tooth replacement with implants or conventional fixed dental prostheses for congenitally and traumatically missing anterior teeth. Although the treatment with RBFDPs is technique sensitive, it is extremely reliable given a correct indication and adequate adhesive procedures. (Source: Quintessence International)

Assessment of gingival zenith position and its level relative to age and gender in maxillary anterior teeth
Conclusion: A distal deviation of GZP was observed for central incisors, while the GZP coincided with the VBM for lateral incisors and canines. The GZL was apically placed in relation to the GZP of lateral incisors. These elements can be taken up as reference points in periodontal and restorative procedures. An evidence-based evaluation of the concept of centric relation in the 21st century
Kandasamy, Sanjivan / Greene, Charles S. / Obrez, AlesPage 755 - 760The concept and application of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) relationship identified as centric relation (CR) has changed significantly over the past century. Originally proposed as a biologically reasonable position where maxillary and mandibular dentures should occlude, it later was applied to the dentate population as well. The term "ideal" was used by the gnathologic dental community as they sought to define the exact details of CR in terms of condyle-fossa relationships. Assessments of patients' occlusion were then made in relation to CR, and discre...

A classification for assessing surgical difficulty in the extraction of mandibular impacted third molars: Description and clinical validation
Conclusion: Modified JD classification resulted in a reliable tool for predicting surgical time of impacted mandibular third molar extraction; this could represent an adjunctive tool for clinician and patient in the decision-making process. (Source: Quintessence International)

Long-term randomized clinical trial evaluating the effects of fixture surface acid-etching and machined collar design on bone healing
Camarda, Aldo J. / Milot, Patrice / Ciaburro, Hugo / Rompr é, Pierre H. / Sallaleh, Imad / Do, Cao Minh AlexandrePage 733 - 743Objectives: An implant with an acid-etched fixture surface and internal-hex collar may achieve greater osseointegration. The goal of this research was to study the effects on long-term bone healing of fixture surface acid-etching and machined collar design.Method and Materials: Three two-part implant types were compared: standard Br ånemark (with an external-hex 1.2 mm long machined flat collar), Swede-Vent (a copy of the Brånemark design, with an identical collar but a fixture surface acid-etch...

Hemostatic gingival retraction agents and their impact on prosthodontic treatment steps: A narrative review
Maischberger, Christian / Stawarczyk, Bogna / von Hajmasy, Annette / Liebermann, AnjaPage 719 - 732The purpose of this topic review is to give a general overview of gingival retraction agents used during prosthodontic treatment, and the possible difficulties connected to them that may be faced by the dentist. Hemostatic agents are important for successful gingival retraction and in achieving hemostasis. However, these agents may show numerous negative effects on the prosthodontic treatment and oral tissues of which the practicing dentist must be aware, and which will be elucidated in this review. Effect of implant number on the movement of mandibular implant-supported overdentures under biting force: An in-vitro study
Zhang, Xin / Liu, Wei / Qing, Hai / Pei, Xibo / Chen, Junyu / Wang, JianPage 709 - 717Objective: Many studies have investigated the effect of implant number on the performance of implant-supported overdentures (ISO), but few have focused on denture movement. This in-vitro study aims to investigate the influence of implant number on the movement of mandibular ISO under biting force.Method and Materials: An edentulous mandibular cast and 12 overdentures (n = 12) were fabricated, and a locator attachment system with blue nylon inserts was chosen for this study. Four implant positions were simulated: anterior midline (1-ISO), ...

Efficacy of flapless intentional replantation with enamel matrix derivative in the treatment of hopeless teeth associated with endodontic-periodontal lesions: A 2-year prospective case series
Saida, Hiroyuki / Fukuba, Shunsuke / Miron, Richard / Shirakata, YoshinoriPage 699 - 707Objective: In this prospective case series, the effects of flapless intentional replantation (IR) with root surface conditioning with enamel matrix derivative (EMD) was evaluated for the treatment of periodontally-endodontally involved hopeless teeth.Method and Materials: A total of 17 teeth (17 patients, aged 40 to 73) with ≥ 10 mm attachment loss and radiographic bone loss to the apex were included in the study. The affected teeth were atraumatically extracted using a flapless approach, then granulation tissues, calculus, and necrot...

Comparison of the antibacterial efficacy of sonic- and two ultrasonic-activated irrigation techniques in reducing intracanal Enterococcus faecalis populations
R ödig, Tina / Zimmermann, Felix / Konietschke, Frank / Sydow, Hans Georg / Wiegand, AnnettePage 689 - 697Objective: This in-vitro study evaluated the antibacterial efficacy of sonic and ultrasonic irrigation with either intermittent or continuous flush in root canals infected with Enterococcus faecalis.Method and Materials: Seventy single-rooted, extracted teeth with straight root canals were prepared with FlexMaster NiTi-instruments, sterilized, inoculated with E faecalis and incubated for 72 hours. Sixty roots were randomly divided into four experimental groups as well as into infection and sterile controls (n = 10 eac...

The challenge of managing patients with generalized short root anomaly: A case report
Michelogiannakis, Dimitrios / Vastardis, Heleni / Melakopoulos, Ioannis / Papathanasopoulou, Chrysanthy / Tosios, Konstantinos I.Page 673 - 679The case of an 18-year-old woman with generalized short root anomaly (SRA) is presented, and the clinical management and challenges associated with this rare condition are discussed. The patient was referred for restoration of the edentulous maxillary left anterior region. Due to the SRA, the patient had previously received limited orthodontic treatment for the ectopic maxillary canines. The maxillary left canine failed during orthodontic traction, the left lateral incisor migrated ...

Computerized three-dimensional design for accurate orienting and dimensioning artificial dental socket for tooth autotransplantation
Conclusion: We present an improved technique for autotransplantation based on computerized 3D simulations and guidance for accurate dimensioning and optimal locating of the artificial socket relative to the alveolar bone borders and the adjacent teeth roots. This technique may significantly simplify the autotransplantation procedure and will probably also increase its success rate and use in young patients, even in cases with absence of a buccal plate.
