Influence of dialysis therapies on oral health: a pilot study
Conclusion: HD presented a more adverse impact on oral health than PD, particularly periodontal disease and oral Candida colonization; however, this impact on oral health appears to be reduced or ameliorated when patients change from HD to PD therapy. (Source: Quintessence International)

Oral rehabilitation in a patient with sclerotic-phenotype chronic graft versus host disease: a case report
This report presents a full-mouth implant-retained reconstruction in a 35-year-old male patient who had undergone alloHCT for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia and developed sclerotic cGVHD afterwards. Implant-retained prosthetics might be a practicable treatment for patients with these complications. (Source: Quintessence International)

What do patients fear most about having oral surgery?
Conclusions: The results of this study show that patients have fear of pain during and after the procedure as well as of the local anesthetic injection. To maximize patient comfort, how all these factors will be properly managed needs to be discussed preoperatively. (Source: Quintessence International)

Shaping properties and outcomes of nickel-titanium rotary and reciprocation systems using micro-computed tomography: a systematic review
Conclusions: The use of the same system in rotary or reciprocation motions and reciprocating single file systems have comparable transportation and centering ability. No difference was observed between rotary and reciprocation systems/motions in surface area and volume of the canal changes. Untouched canal walls and accumulation of debris remained controversial. No relationship was found between kinematics of instrumentation and the formation of dentinal cracks. (Source: Quintessence International)

Metal-free implant-supported single-tooth restorations. Part I: Abutments and cemented crowns
Edelhoff, Daniel / Schweiger, Josef / Prandtner, Otto / Stimmelmayr, Michael / G üth, Jan-FrederikPage 176 - 184In many areas of restorative dentistry, metal-free materials offer an alternative to metal-based restorations while ensuring high levels of biocompatibility and esthetics. Rapidly evolving CAD/CAM technology has significantly expanded the range of materials available, providing access to materials classes and their combinations not previously available within conventional manufacturing, such as zirconia ceramics and hybrid ceramics. In addition, digital methods offer previously unavailable options in diagnostics...

Effects of cigarette smoke and tobacco heating aerosol on color stability of dental enamel, dentin, and composite resin restorations
Conclusion: CS causes significant tooth discoloration and induces color mismatch between dental hard tissues and composite resin restorations. Reducing or eliminating the deposits derived from tobacco combustion could minimize the impact of tobacco products on tooth discoloration. (Source: Quintessence International)

Unexpected radiopaque foreign bodies encountered in dental practice
In this study, the proportions of foreign bodies inserted intentionally (48%) and unintentionally (52%) were similar. When the foreign bodies were grouped based on the cause of insertion, the following frequencies were observed: Treatment, 41%; Esthetics, 7%; Cultural, (Source: Quintessence International)

Review of cone beam computed tomography guidelines in North America
Conclusion: In 1999, the American Dental Association (ADA) recognized Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology as the ninth dental specialty in the United States. The American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) issued their first statement on the use of CBCT in 2008. There have since been several statements issued, independently or jointly with other specialty organizations, related to the use and interpretation of the CBCT volumes. The guidelines identified Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists (OMR) as providers of interpretative services, portrayed as key players in the dissemination of information related to CBC...

Neurologic issues related to glucocorticoid use in oral surgery: memory and attention impairment in association with cannabis consumption
This article aims to bring to the attention of dental health professionals the main neurophysiologic mechanisms by which glucocorticoid hormones can affect memory and attention. In addition, in the context of increasing global prevalence and incidence of cannabinoid consumption, both for medical and recreational purposes, the issue of the association of cortisone-derived drugs in the systemic context of these phytocannabinoids is addressed, in terms of memory issues and attention. 10-year outcomes with immediate and early loaded implants with a chemically modified SLA surface
Nicolau, Pedro / Guerra, Fernando / Reis, Rita / Krafft, Tim / Benz, Korbinian / Jackowski, JochenPage 114 - 124The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term outcomes in a 10-year follow-up study of patients who previously completed a 3-year multicenter randomized controlled trial of immediate and early loading of dental implants with a hydrophilic and chemically active surface (SLActive) in the posterior maxilla or mandible. The patients received implants to replace at least one missing tooth, with provisional restoration on the day of surgery (immediate loading) or 28 to 34 days later (early loading). Implant survival,...

Five-year results of nonsurgical treatment to manage severe generalized aggressive periodontitis
Hamad, Chaman / Haller, Bernd / Hoffmann, Thomas / Lorenz, KatrinPage 104 - 113It is challenging for clinicians to carry out successful periodontal therapy and maintain a full dentition in young patients with generalized bone loss of 90%. Due to advanced attachment loss and the young age of patients, fixed or removable prosthetic treatment options are compromised. Implant therapy would be complex and expensive. The presented case shows the successful conservative periodontal therapy of advanced generalized aggressive periodontitis in a 29-year-old female. A conservative approach was applied and maintained all teeth with pa...

Influence of delayed light curing on the cuspal deflection and microleakage of a dual-cured composite resin in Class 2 restorations
Conclusion: A short delay in light curing of a dual-cure composite resin could significantly reduce the initial cuspal deflection measured 6 minutes after light curing, thereby probably reducing the polymerization shrinkage stress. However, the curing mode did not significantly influence microleakage and enamel cracks. (Source: Quintessence International)
