Whole-Genome Re-sequencing and Transcriptome Reveal Candidate Genes and Pathways Associated with Hybrid Sterility in Hermaphroditic Argopecten Scallops
In this study, whole-genome re-sequencing and transcriptomic analysis were performed in sterile and fertile hybrid scallops. The potential genetic variations and abnormally expressed genes were detected to explore the mechanism underlying hybrid sterility in hermaphroditic Argopecten scallops. Compared with fertile hybrids, 24 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with 246 variations were identified to be related to fertility regulation, which were mainly enriched in germarium-derived egg chamber formation, spermatogenesis, spermatid development, mismatch repair, mitotic and meiotic cell cycles, Wnt signaling pathway, MAPK...

Identification of Genes Related to Resistance to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Based on Co-expression Network Analysis in Grass Carp
This study revealed the gene network associated with disease resistance after I. multifiliis infection. The disease resistance-related pathways and central genes identified in this study are candidate references for breeders breeding disease-resistant. The results of this study may also provide some references for the development of drugs to antagonize I. multifiliis infection.PMID:37610535 | DOI:10.1007/s10126-023-10243-2 (Source: Marine Biotechnology)

Insights Into a Chitin Synthase of Kuruma Shrimp Penaeus japonicus and Its Role in Peritrophic Membrane and Cuticle Formation
Mar Biotechnol (NY). 2023 Aug 23. doi: 10.1007/s10126-023-10244-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSynthesis of chitin is a subject of great interest in the fields of physiology and immunology of crustaceans. Chitinous tissues include not only the carapace, but also an acellular membrane in the intestine called the peritrophic membrane (PM). Here, we describe the first report of chitin synthase (CHS) of a penaeid shrimp, kuruma shrimp Penaeus japonicus. Histological observations showed that fecal matter in the midgut of kuruma shrimp was wrapped with a PM, which physically separated it from the midgut epithelium. Subsequentl...

Study on the Role of Mitophagy Receptor PHB2 in Doubly Uniparental Inheritance of Hyriopsis cumingii
Mar Biotechnol (NY). 2023 Aug 18. doi: 10.1007/s10126-023-10240-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn bivalves, the heterogeneity of mitochondrial DNA and its unique mode of transmission have been the focus of attention, which is called doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI). Prohibitin-2 (phb2) is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein that is a key mitophagy receptor for parental mitochondrial removal. Hyriopsis cumingii is a freshwater bivalve in China, the full-length cDNA of H. cumingii phb2 (named Hcphb2) is 2917 bp and encodes a total of 300 amino acids, a highly conserved sequence. Hcphb2 was highly expressed in the ov...

Circulating MicroRNAs Indicative of Sex and Stress in the European Seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax): Toward the Identification of New Biomarkers
Mar Biotechnol (NY). 2023 Aug 15. doi: 10.1007/s10126-023-10237-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroRNAs (miRNAs) constitute a new category of biomarkers. Studies on miRNAs in non-mammalian species have drastically increased in the last few years. Here, we explored the use of miRNAs as potential, poorly invasive markers, to identify sex and characterize acute stress in fish. The European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was chosen as a model because of its rapid response to stress and its specific sex determination system, devoid of sexual chromosomes. We performed a small RNA-sequencing analysis in the blood plasma of mal...
