[Expression of Motion Artifacts in OCT-Angiography Imaging in Healthy Subjects Using Two Different Devices].
CONCLUSION: Despite different software and hardware approaches, both devices were able to take high-quality images with a very low prevalence of motion artifacts. Nevertheless, these artifacts still also occur in healthy subjects with good fixation. With regards to MAS, there was a high agreement between the two readers. However, the analysis of artifacts remains complex and requires experience as well as a precise assessment in evaluating OCT-A images. [Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy].
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with AMNR suffer from acute onset of unilateral or bilateral central scotomas. Visual acuity is often only mildly affected. AMNR has a variable prognosis. In some cases, a self-limiting course with retinal recovery is observed while some patients have persistent reduction in visual acuity. [The Natural History of Choroideraemia].
Authors: Seitz IP, Fischer MD Abstract Since its first description in 1872, there has been a lively academic debate about the natural history of choroideremia. Due to the low prevalence of choroideremia, interest in this discussion has been limited to subspecialists. However, the current development of novel, potentially disease-modifying therapies has sparked the attention of a larger professional audience. This review summarises the literature around the natural history of the disease and illustrates its key aspects using a simple two-stage model. Apart from a comprehensive discussion of ubiquitous clinical modal...

Authors: Fischer DM, Paquet-Durand F Abstract Hereditary retinal degenerative diseases are mostly diseases of the photoreceptors and/or the retinal pigment epithelium, which lead to loss of vision or even complete blindness. To this day, these diseases are mostly untreatable and represent a considerable burden for patients and their relatives. This review article highlights some of the challenges that arise in the development of new therapies for inherited retinal degeneration, in particular the problem of the enormous genetic heterogeneity of these diseases and the question of how new forms of treatment can be mad...

They are used to capture the patient-relevant impact of an intervention or a loss of function. In patients with loss of vision, vision-related quality of life is assessed in order to quantify the impact of visual impairment in everyday life. When using quality of life instruments, psychometric characteristics - such as reliability, validity and responsiveness - are of great importance to ensure that the collected data are robust. Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease and Birdshot Retinochoroidopathy, Similarities and Differences: A Glimpse into the Clinicopathology of Stromal Choroiditis, a Perspective and a Review.
Authors: Elahi S, Herbort CP Abstract The purpose of this work was to give a comprehensive and updated review on two primary stromal choroiditis entities, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) and birdshot retinochoroiditis (BRC). Their appraisal has become much more precise thanks to new investigational methods, such as indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) and enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT), which give substantially improved imaging access to the choroid. In this review, we focus on the crucial changes brought by this progress in the understanding, diagnosis, and management of these dis...

[Pars plana vitrectomy].
Authors: Bopp S, Kellner U Abstract Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) allows the treatment of a multitude of vitreoretinal disorders involving the vitreous, the retina or the choroid. There is a multitude of possible surgical sequences: peeling maneuvers, liquid perfluorocarbone, removal of traction and media opacities, retinopexy or destructive photocoagulation, and as ultima ratio, retinotomies and retinectomies. The intravitreal tamponade serves as a substitute in the vitreous cavity, allowing photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) to reconnect. Due to the many potential complications, close monitoring is...

[Scleral Buckling].
Authors: Bopp S Abstract Buckling techniques are used for rhegmatogenous (break-induced) retinal detachment. The aim is to achieve a functional closure of the retinal breakwith permanent retinal attachment by scleral indentation and coagulation of retinal holes. The surgery is primarily extraocular. The use of different buckling methods depends on various factors. The success rates are high at 54 - 97% after the initial procedure, but decrease as the macula is detached. When the possibilities of the scleral buckling procedures are exhausted, pars plana vitrectomy is the next therapeutical option. In recent year...

Visual Performance, Subjective Satisfaction and Quality of Life Effect of a New Refractive Intraocular Lens with Central Extended Depth of Focus.
CONCLUSIONS: The Lucidis IOL demonstrates a good safety profile, with an acceptably low complication rate. While the uncorrected visual performance of this new optical design is inferior to that of other EDOF IOLs for distance vision, it achieves better results in intermediate and near vision, with consistently near-normal contrast sensitivity. Interestingly, self-reported spectacle independence and subjective patient satisfaction were high for all distances. Authors: Garweg JG, Messerli J Abstract Acute posterior and panuveitis mostly affect younger patients and affect both eyes in more than half of cases. Because of the severe consequences in the clinical course, rapid and broad differential diagnosis are critical steps. Permanent loss of vision after a delay in starting therapy and the initiation of ineffective treatment are both serious risks. The initial diagnostic classification is based on clinical presentation (anatomical localisation and type of inflammation) and clinical course and, secondarily, on the response to acute therapy. [Impairment of the Visual System in Glaucoma].
Authors: Schmidt MA, Engelhorn T, Dörfler A, Michelson G Abstract MR Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) enables visualisation of the visual system in glaucoma; it has been shown that the atrophy of the optic radiation is more pronounced in glaucoma than in age-matched controls. The atrophy of the optic radiation thereby correlates with OCT and visual field measures. Diffusion tensor imaging permits quantification of the axonal integrity of the optic radiation by calculation of fractional anisotropy (FA) and radial diffusivity (RD). Both within and also outside the visual system, there are substantial changes in FA...

Authors: Killer HE Abstract Normal tension glaucoma is a variant of primary open angle glaucoma. It is characterized by normal intraocular pressure. Although there are several pathophysiological explanations (e. g. vascular dysregulation, the role of the lamina cribrosa), none of these explanations can fully explain its pathophysiology. The optic nerve is a white matter tract of the brain. It is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid on its whole length. Neuroradiological examinations hint at a neurodegenerative origin of normal tension glaucoma. Impaired cerebrospinal fluid dynamics and reduced clearance of Aβ a...

[Optic Disc Changes in Childhood].
Authors: Tegetmeyer H Abstract The ophthalmological inspection of the optic disc is possible since the time of birth. Thereby, changes of normal optic disc configuration can already be detected in early infancy. Congenital optic disc anomalies can go along with congenital malformations of the brain or with syndromal systemic diseases. Acquired changes of the optic disc are often caused by tumours or acute diseases of the optic nerve or the central nervous system. Modern imaging techniques permit documentation, quantification and follow-up of optic disc changes. The classification of optic disc changes into congenit...
