Foveal-Sparing ILM Peeling with ILM Flap Transposition over the Macular Hole for Repair of Full-Thickness Macular Holes
CONCLUSIONS: A combination of foveal-sparing ILM peeling with ILM flap techniques was shown to be a safe and effective surgical option for patients with full-thickness macular holes, resulting in a high macular hole closure rate and improvement in visual acuity in the majority of patients.PMID:38242161 | DOI:10.1055/a-2217-2568 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

Endothelial Cell Loss in Patients with Phakic Intraocular Lenses
Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2024 Jan 19. doi: 10.1055/a-2209-5251. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough the safety of phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) has been continuously improved over 70-years of development, high endothelial cell losses can occur even with current pIOL models. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the distance of a pIOL to the corneal endothelium plays a crucial role in the extent of endothelial cell loss. For this reason alone, higher endothelial cell loss tends to be observed with anterior chamber lenses than with posterior chamber lenses. Adequate preoperative anterior chamber depth is essential, a...

Clinical, Anatomical, and Densitometric Changes following Dresden vs. Accelerated Corneal Cross-Linking in Progressive Keratoconus
CONCLUSION: ACXL and DCXL effectively halted KC progression. ACXL proved to be a safe time-saving alternative to conventional DCXL. DCXL led to a reduction in CCT and an increment in the CD of the central anterior stroma during 24 months of follow-up.PMID:38232738 | DOI:10.1055/a-2206-1420 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

Ocular Trauma characterization in a reference emergency eye center in Colombia, FOSCAL
Conclusions In line with global literature, a much higher proportion of men than women, sought consultation for ocular trauma. The findings suggest a need for improvement in the referral processes from the institutions with the lowest level of care. Lack of awareness about eye protection is an issue. Surgical exploration or additional tests may be necessary for precise injury classification; therefore, we propose adding a "still to be determined" category to the BETT initial classification. These cases may be reclassified later, thus improving the accuracy of OTS calculation. Zusammenfassung Hintergrund Augentrauma ist ein...

Ist die exsudative neovaskul äre AMD eine chronische Erkrankung? Analyse von Langzeitverläufen unter einer Anti-VEGF-Therapie
CONCLUSION: The fact, that in the present study a long-term and intensive need for therapy was again in the majority of patients (approx. 80%) with exudative nAMD observed, supports the assessment that nAMD should be regarded as a chronic disease. Therefore, a proactive treatment strategy with consistent therapy at any sign of lesion activity might be recommended. Particularly in view of the risk of irreversible loss of vision, long term adherence of patients is also crucial for the best possible long term therapeutic outcome.PMID:38181813 | DOI:10.1055/a-2239-6394 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

Torpedo-Makulopathie: Fallserienpr äsentation einer unterdiagnostizierten seltenen Erkrankung unter Verwendung multimodaler Bildgebung
CONCLUSION: Torpedo maculopathy is a rare well described clinical condition that displays pathognomonic features on regular fundoscopy examination. Our case series showed that the use of multimodal imaging, including SD-OCT, FAF and OCTA, seems to be of little value in increasing its recognition thus confirming the importance of its typical clinical appearance among ophthalmologists. Interestingly, SD-OCT and OCTA demonstrated no abnormalities of the adjacent macula of the affected eye, which seems to confirm its isolated local unilateral ophthalmic condition.PMID:38176433 | DOI:10.1055/a-2238-7245 (Source: Klinische Monat...

Postoperative RNFL-Changes after Successful Trabeculectomy: 2-Year Outcomes
CONCLUSION: The TE is an effective method to reduce the IOD and the amount of IOP-lowering medication. Nevertheless, a significant further loss in RNFL thickness was observed in the first 12 months after TE. Thus, RNFL changes seem to stabilise only after a protracted period.PMID:38134909 | DOI:10.1055/a-2206-1297 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

Preoperative Detection of Local Tumor Extent in Patients with Advanced Retinoblastoma: Predictive Value of MRI and Clinical Findings
CONCLUSION: The local tumor extent of retinoblastoma with infiltration of the optic nerve and choroid can be well estimated based on radiological and clinical characteristics before treatment initiation. The combination of clinical and radiological risk factors supports the possibility of early treatment stratification in retinoblastoma patients.PMID:38134910 | DOI:10.1055/a-2198-7630 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

Cytokines in Immune-mediated "Non-infectious" Uveitis
Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2023 Dec 22. doi: 10.1055/a-2202-8704. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUveitis is a significant cause of ocular morbidity and accounts for approximately 5 - 10% of visual impairments worldwide, particularly among the working-age population. Infections are the cause of ~ 50% cases of uveitis, but it has been suggested that infection might also be implicated in the pathogenesis of immune-mediated "non-infectious" uveitis. There is growing evidence that cytokines (i.e., interleukins, interferons, etc.) are key mediators of immune-mediated "non-infectious" uveitis. For example, activation of the interleuk...
