Medicamentous Therapy of Malignant Eyelid Tumors
CONCLUSION: Even though the data on these eye tumors is still limited, the reported case studies using systemic therapies for malignant eyelid tumors demonstrate the potential of this treatment modality. However, the need for further research is high especially concerning the combination of different therapy principles for increasing the effectiveness of eyelid tumor therapy.PMID:38413000 | DOI:10.1055/a-2255-5937 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

The Impact of Aging on the Function of Retinal Ganglion Cells
Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2024 Feb;241(2):162-169. doi: 10.1055/a-2239-0290. Epub 2024 Feb 27.ABSTRACTAging is a major risk factor for retinal neurodegenerative diseases. Aged mammalian retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) lack the ability to regenerate axons after injury. Rodent models suggest that older age increases the vulnerability of RGCs to injury and impairs RGC function as well as their functional recovery. Molecular changes - including decreased circulating levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) - might contribute to impaired RGC dendritic extension during aging. Moreover, age-related mitochondrial dysfunction...

Systemic Diseases in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma
Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2024 Feb;241(2):170-176. doi: 10.1055/a-2239-0123. Epub 2024 Feb 27.ABSTRACTPrimary open-angle glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease with progressive chronic optic neuropathy and corresponding visual field defects. In this literature review, we discuss systemic diseases and their mechanism for developing glaucoma, including systemic hypertension and hypotension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, chronic kidney disease, migraine, and polypharmacy.PMID:38412981 | DOI:10.1055/a-2239-0123 (Source: Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde)

Augenver ätzungen
Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2024 Feb 27. doi: 10.1055/a-2255-5970. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChemical burns of the ocular surface (CBOS) are emergencies of highest urgency. Therefore, an adequate emergency care is mandatory. Following a precise analysis of the initial damage, a staged therapeutic approach is used to prevent persistent impairment of the ocular surface. In the acute stage, the prevention of complications is targeted (symblepharon, conjunctival scarring, lacrimal stenosis, corneal ulceration, intraocular inflammation, elevated intraocular pressure, etc.). In later stages, if complications have developed, a se...

Intraoperative Complications in Cataract Surgery
This article offers a focus on conditions such as zonulopathy and pseudoexfoliation that can pose challenges to cataract surgery. It discusses the use of specialized tools such as capsular tension rings and capsular hooks and precise maneuvers to minimize stress on weakened zonules in order to ensure in-the-bag fixation of the IOL.Furthermore, the article addresses appropriate actions towards intraoperative complications such as anterior or posterior capsule ruptures and loss of nuclear fragments into the vitreous cavity.Exploring innovative advancements, this article presents the latest alternatives for intracapsular lens...
