Empagliflozin improves high-sensitive cardiac troponin-I and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease: a post-hoc analysis of EMPA-CARD Trial
ConclusionEmpagliflozin compared to placebo was superior in reducing circulating hs-cTnI that may indicate improvements in cardiomyocytes function in patients with T2DM and CAD. Moreover, empagliflozin had a modest impact on the serum lipid profile biomarkers.Trial registrationThe original EMPA-CARD study has been registered in Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials.www.IRCT.ir, Identifier: IRCT20190412043247N2. Registration Date: 6/13/2020. Registration timing: prospective. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders)

Understanding impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on glycemic control for patients with diabetes in Japan
ConclusionAlthough the glycemic control in patients with diabetes improved overall under COVID-19 restrictions, those on insulin, GLP-1, or sulfonylureas worsened. These findings suggest the need to better understand what drives differences in glycemic control to better support people with diabetes for future epidemiological outbreaks. The burden of type 2 diabetes in adolescents and young adults in Mexico: analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study, 1990 to 2019
ConclusionThe surge in disability corresponded to the upsurge in obesity and overweight rates in Mexico among the younger population. This happened despite improvements in socio-economic status and healthcare access in Mexico which underscores the need for diabetes education in the public health sector. The levels and trends of metabolic risk factors in the elderly population at the national and sub-national scale in Iran from 1990 to 2016
ConclusionThe rising prevalence of most MRFs, as well as the greater prevalence and mean of all MRFs in women, necessitate effective public health policies to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases and run preventive programs. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders)

The diabetic patient between sustainability and effectiveness of new treatments
ConclusionThis analysis highlights how regulation on the one hand leads to facilitating prescribing to meet a population need that is not fully satisfied, but on the other hand leads to increased prescribing and increased health care expenditures that may likely mask phenomena of prescribing inappropriateness. Assessment of quality of life in patients with permanent hypoparathyroidism receiving conventional treatment
ConclusionPatients with permanent hypoparathyroidism had impairment in their QoL. Age, socioeconomic conditions, renal function, magnesium level, and 25 hydroxy-vitamin D level may interfere in the decline of the QoL of these patients. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders)

Pancreatic GLUT2 protein expression and isolated islets insulin secretion decreased in high-fat fed rat dams
ConclusionThe chronic consumption of high-fat foods during prepregnancy, pregnancy, and lactation periods can lead to glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and inhibition of pancreatic GLUT2 expression, which impairs glucose homeostasis. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully monitor the diet composition of dams during this critical period. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders)

Impact of protein deficient diet on the pharmacokinetics of glibenclamide in a model of malnutrition in rats
ConclusionFrom this study it concludes that there is an increase in the T ½, Cmax, Tmax and AUC(0 –∞) of glibenclamide in malnourished rats while the total body clearance and volume of distribution is lowered. Therefore this study proposes to conduct an adequate pharmacokinetic study in malnourished patients to decide whether the standard glibenclamide dose should be adapted according to the nutritional status of the individual. Unraveling the link between insulin resistance and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease): A Narrative Review
ConclusionsThere is a clear association between NAFLD and elevated levels of IR. Several metabolic conditions, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, are closely interrelated with NAFLD and IR. Raising awareness about NAFLD and promoting a healthy lifestyle are crucial steps to reverse the impact of this disease. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders)

Acceleration of a delayed healing wound repair model in diabetic rats by additive impacts of photobiomodulation plus conditioned medium of adipose-derived stem cells
ConclusionPBM, CM, and CM  + PBM interventions substantially enhanced the maturation stage of the wound healing process in IIDHWM of TIDM rats by mitigating the inflammatory response and reducing CFU count. Moreover, these treatments promoted new tissue formation in the wound bed and improved wound strength. Notably, the combined effects of CM + PBM surpassed the individual effects of CM and PBM.
