Description of Audiologic, Developmental, Ophthalmologic, and Neurologic Diagnoses at a Primary Care Clinic for Children in Foster Care
Conclusion: These findings add to the limited data regarding medically diagnosed audiologic, developmental, ophthalmologic, and neurologic conditions for children in foster care in a primary care setting. A medical home may help children in foster care, who experience many barriers to comprehensive health care, to better identify and address these health conditions. Future studies are needed that examine health outcomes of children in foster care with these health conditions followed in a medical home. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Black Families' Experiences of Developmental Screening: Review of Well-Child Visits to Inform Enhanced Autism Spectrum Disorder Risk Assessment
Conclusion: Pediatric providers cannot place the burden on families to raise autism concerns. Although some level of developmental risk was noted at most visits for children later diagnosed with ASD, referrals were only made when providers were also concerned, and most of these were for speech-language evaluation. Ongoing work is necessary to better understand how existing care systems interact with diverse families to inform the creation of inclusive screening practices that mitigate diagnostic delays. Implementing the Get SET Early Model in a Community Setting to Lower the Age of ASD Diagnosis
Conclusion: Toddlers with ASD were diagnosed nearly 3 years earlier than the most recent CDC report, which allowed children to start a treatment program by 36 months. Overall, Get SET Early was an effective strategy for improving the current approach to screening, evaluation, and treatment. Efforts to demonstrate sustainability are underway. Interoception in Practice: The Gut-Brain Connection
Tony is a five and a half-year-old boy who has been a patient in your primary care practice since he was adopted at birth. He has been treated by a child and adolescent psychiatrist for behavioral concerns starting at age 3 years and has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) combined type, anxiety disorder, and insomnia. He presents today with complaints of repeated emesis and refusal to eat or drink over the past 2 weeks and is now dehydrated. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Role of Pediatricians, Pediatric Associations, and Academic Departments in Ensuring Optimal Early Childhood Development Globally: Position Paper of the International Pediatric Association
ABSTRACT: Early childhood (birth–8 years), particularly the first 3 years, is the most critical time in development because of the highly sensitive developing brain. Providing appropriate developmental care (i.e., nurturing care, as defined by the World Health Organization [WHO]) during early childhood is key to ensuring a child's holistic development. Pediatricians are expected to play a critical role in supporting early childhood development (ECD) through providing developmental services such as developmental monitoring, anticipatory guidance, screening, and referral to medical and/or community-based services when ...

Autism Spectrum Disorder, Extremism, and the Role of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatric Clinicians
Abstract: Extremism is a global phenomenon, with an increasing domestic and international presence. Extremists recruit persons to their causes through online forums that spread hate-filled narratives and promote violence. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder may be vulnerable to recruitment through these online forums, and clinicians who work with autistic adolescents, young adults, and their families should familiarize themselves with the risk and identify strategies based on a multidisciplinary approach in the early identification, holistic prevention, and care-based intervention strategies of at-risk adolescent...

Completion of Social Drivers of Health Screenings in Pediatric Practices Participating in a Quality Improvement Initiative
Conclusion: This project provided a framework for successful development and efficient integration of screening and referral processes into clinic workflow. Implementing Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, monthly chart reviews, and collaborative meetings facilitated increased documentation of screening, counseling, and referral for positive SDoH screens in participating practices. Future analysis should measure health outcomes and social and community capital derived by health systems and patients from such interventions. The Hidden Disease: Delayed Diagnosis in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Co-Occurring Conditions
In this study, we highlight cases of delayed DMD diagnosis that resulted from misattribution of early motor symptoms to co-occurring neurocognitive conditions. We also investigate the difference in age at DMD diagnosis in the setting of specific co-occurring neurocognitive conditions. Method: In this study, we reviewed 40 consecutive patients seen at a Certified Duchenne Care Center, excluding siblings of already-diagnosed patients. We highlight cases of significant delay in DMD diagnosis in the setting of co-occurring neurocognitive diagnoses. We also investigate the association of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a...

Pilot Study of Maternal Autoantibody–Related Autism
The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of maternal autoantibody–related autism spectrum disorder (MAR-ASD) in 2 geographically distinct DBPNet clinical sites (Pennsylvania and Arkansas). MAR-ASD is a biologically defined subtype of ASD that is defined by the presence of autoantibodies specific to proteins in the fetal brain and present in approximately 20% of a Northern California sample but has not been studied in other states. Methods: Sixty-eight mothers of children with ASD were recruited from 2 DBPNet clinics and provided blood samples. Mothers also completed behavioral questionnaires abo...

Severe Vitamin D Deficiency in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusion: These cases highlight the importance of screening “at-risk” youth for VDD. Clinicians should be cognizant that children and adolescents with ASD and restricted eating can have severe manifestations of hypocalcemia and VDD. Decreased sun exposure because of isolating indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic increased their risk for this. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Cyberbullying Among Adolescents with Chronic Illnesses in Thailand: Prevalence and Relationship with Health-Risk Behaviors
ABSTRACT: Background: The use of social media may enhance the quality of life in adolescents living with chronic illnesses but may increase the risk of cyberbullying. Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of cyberbullying among adolescents with chronic illnesses and relationship with health-risk behaviors. Methods: This is an online survey of randomly recruited adolescents aged 11 to 18 years with chronic illness managed at Siriraj Hospital, Thailand, during 2019 to 2020. Participants were asked to respond anonymously to validated online questionnaires to evaluate health-risk...

How Are the Sleep Problems of Children in the US Foster Care System Addressed?
Conclusion: Children in foster care face a range of risk factors that increase the likelihood of poor/insufficient sleep, but these findings suggest this critical aspect of health requires greater clinical and research attention. As these data were collected during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic, replication studies are necessary. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Associations of Reproductive Health Concerns, Health-Related Quality of Life, and Stress Among Adolescents and Young Adults with Chronic Illness
Conclusion: RHC, health-related anxiety, and stress can impede healthy sexual and reproductive health and development of AYA living with chronic conditions. Providers' proactive exploration of patients' concerns about their reproductive future can offer critical support as they navigate the unique existential challenges of early adulthood.
