Mother-Adolescent Discrepancies in Ratings of Adolescents' Adjustment: Associations with Maternal Mental Health and Family Factors
Conclusion: Findings indicate that mothers' poor mental health is related to their reports of more frequent psychological problems in their adolescents. To verify the accuracy of maternal reports, additional raters and additional methods, such as behavioral observation and clinical interview, would be helpful. Development of a Training Curriculum for Hospital Security About Autism Spectrum Disorder
ABSTRACT: Objective: To evaluate whether a newly developed autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-training curriculum for hospital security officers improves comfort, knowledge, and practice. Methods: Participants were security officers. The ASD-training curriculum was a 45-minute interactive session, adapted from trainings developed for other types of hospital providers. The curriculum included information regarding the presentation of, and challenges faced by, children with ASD in the hospital setting. Officers completed surveys before (T1), immediately after (T2), and 3 months after (T3) the training to assess co...

Autism-Focused Online Training in Shared Decision-Making: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: This quasi-RCT presents evidence that knowledge of SDM in care of children with autism can be enhanced by online case-based training focused either indirectly on evidence-based practice or directly on SDM. Consistent online SDM training can be provided to all trainees, irrespective of the location. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Congenital Blindness and Autism Spectrum Disorder
CASE: Emily is a 10-year-old girl who is in fifth grade. She has known congenital blindness secondary to septo-optic dysplasia with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia and precocious puberty. Emily was referred to a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics clinic for concerns of academic, social, and language challenges. Emily was born at term gestation after an uncomplicated pregnancy. At 4 months of age, she underwent ophthalmologic evaluation because of nystagmus, reduced visual tracking and response to light, and increased startle response to touch. An magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and orbits demonstrated bila...

Anxiety and Depressive Disorders in Children Born Preterm: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusion: Preterm birth is associated with a higher prevalence of anxiety, but not depressive disorders, from 3 to 19 years of age, suggesting distinct etiological pathways in this high-risk population. The findings support variation in the rates of specific anxiety diagnoses, indicating the need to extend neurodevelopmental surveillance to encompass a holistic emotional screening approach. Association Between Symbolic Play and Language: A Comparison Between Typically Developing Children and Children with Down Syndrome
Conclusion: When providing intervention, speech-language pathologists need to promote the development of symbolic play in addition to language, given the association between the two. They should also look into introducing an augmentative and alternative communication system to the children who demonstrate age-appropriate symbolic play skills but have trouble with symbolic language production. An Implementation Approach Comparison of a Child Care Center-Based Obesity Prevention Program
ABSTRACT: Objective: To compare the effectiveness of the Healthy Caregivers-Healthy Children (HC2) phase 1 (2011–2014) and 2 (2015–2018) child care center (CCC)-based obesity prevention intervention(s) on child dietary practices and body mass index percentile (PBMI) outcomes over 2 years. Phase 1 was implemented via a university-based research team, and phase 2 was delivered via a train-the-trainers approach (university-based research team trains preschool-based coaches, who in turn train CCC teachers to implement and disseminate HC2). Methods: Phase 1 and 2 were both cluster randomized controlled trials...

Network-Specific Corticothalamic Dysconnection in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ABSTRACT: Background: Functional connectivity (FC) is believed to be abnormal in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Most studies have focused on frontostriatal systems, and the role of the thalamic network in ADHD remains unclear. The current study used FC magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) to explore corticothalamic network properties and correlated network dysconnection with ADHD symptom severity. Methods: Eighteen adolescents with ADHD and 16 healthy controls aged 12 to 17 years underwent resting functional MRI scans, clinical evaluations, and 2 parent rating scales, namely the Swanson, Nola...

The Relationship Between Parental Accommodation and Sleep-Related Problems in Children with Anxiety
Conclusion: Parents of children with elevated anxiety symptoms and sleep-related problems engage in accommodation related to their child's sleep (e.g., co-sleeping). Future research elucidating the potential bidirectional and causal links between parental accommodation and sleep-related problems is a necessary step in adapting sleep treatments for this population. Insights from Behavioral Economics: A Case of Delayed Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder
We present the case of a child of color diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at 67 months of age. Drawing from behavioral economics, we used this case to explore errors in decision-making by clinicians and family members and structural factors that may have delayed ASD diagnosis well beyond the national average.
