Raising the Question: Medication Mix-Up or Diversion
CASE: Max is an 8-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder and long-standing challenges with sleep maintenance, the latter of which persist despite behavioral intervention and environmental modification. When Max wakes in the early morning hours, he tends to wander the house, which causes his mother to be awake to monitor his safety. Given the impact of Max's fragmented sleep on his functioning and that of his family, you begin a trial of gabapentin liquid to promote sleep maintenance. Soon after, Max's mother reports that he is sleeping through the night, for the first time in his life. Two months later, you rece...

Are There Bidirectional Influences Between Screen Time Exposure and Social Behavioral Traits in Young Children?
Conclusion: Screen time in early childhood has lagged influences on social skills and nonsocial behaviors; the reverse relationship is not found. Close monitoring of social behaviors may be warranted in the setting of excessive screen time during early childhood. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Predictors of Preadolescent Children's Recreational Screen Time Duration During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusion: This study sheds light on children's screen use during the COVID-19 pandemic and supports the current screen use guidelines for school-aged children, suggesting that parents monitor use and foster high-quality screen use (e.g., coviewing or used for connection) and device-free recreational activities when possible. Suicidal Ideation in Adolescents: Understanding Results from Screening with the PHQ-9M and the PSC-17P
Conclusion: The PHQ-9M identifies a clinically heterogeneous subset of approximately 5% of adolescents who report occasional to frequent SI. The PSC-17P corroborates their high degree of overall risk and offers additional information that can help pediatricians assess clinical severity and range of psychosocial problems. Given our limited knowledge of how to predict and prevent an individual adolescent's suicide, the focus of screening should be to identify and help the subset of patients with chronic psychosocial vulnerability of any type. Diagnostic Process and Barriers Among Chinese-American and Korean-American Parents of Children with Autism
Conclusion: Although many Chinese-American and Korean-American parents had early concerns regarding their child's development and shared their concerns with health care professionals, parents encountered many barriers, including the stress of the diagnostic process. Chinese-American and Korean-American parents with limited English proficiency required additional support. Health care professionals' active listening and responses to parents' concerns can promote early diagnosis. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Parent-Reported Problems Accessing Mental Health Services Among a National Sample of Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Anxiety
Conclusion: In this nationally representative study, more than half of youth with ASD and anxiety had parent-reported problems accessing needed MHS. Lack of a medical home, co-occurring intellectual disability, and higher socioeconomic status (SES) are associated with problems accessing MHS. Therefore, policies to support the medical home; increase mental health supports available for those with ASD, anxiety, and coexisting intellectual disability; and support access for all SES levels may increase mental health access. Predictors of Stimulant Medication Continuity in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Conclusion: Child demographic factors, parent beliefs, and medication-related factors are associated with continuation of ADHD medication. These findings may facilitate the development of effective strategies to improve ADHD medication continuity for children from diverse groups. Hypokalemia-Induced Rhabdomyolysis in a Child with Autism Affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusion: This case exemplifies the adverse impact that feeding disorders can have on patients with ASD, particularly in the setting of stressors such as a global pandemic, and is also the first documented pediatric case of rhabdomyolysis secondary to hypokalemia from severe undernutrition. It demonstrates that physicians should have a low threshold to assess for clinical and laboratory evidence of rhabdomyolysis in patients with profound hypokalemia because symptoms of hypokalemia-induced rhabdomyolysis can often be subtle, which can delay diagnosis and thereby increase the risk for life-threatening complications fr...

Understanding the Associations Among Perceived Stress, Self-Control Skills, and Overeating in Asian Adolescents
Conclusion: Consistent with Rosenbaum's self-control theory, self-control skills were found to mediate the relationship between perceived stress and emotional and external eating. This study highlights the importance of prevention treatments developed to impart adolescents with self-control skills, decrease their perceived stress, and consequently, reduce their overeating patterns during this intense developmental period.
