Socioeconomic Factors Account for Variability in Language Skills in Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Conclusion: These results demonstrate that variability in EL and RL skills in young children with autism can be accounted for by socioeconomic variables. These findings highlight the necessity for targeted intervention and effective implementation strategies for children with ASD from low-resource households and communities and for policies designed to improve learning opportunities and access to services for these young children and their families. Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics 13 Years After the First Board Certification: Evolving Subspecialty
ABSTRACT: Objective: To examine and define the evolving subspecialty of developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) by analyzing workforce surveys presubspecialty and postsubspecialty certification. Methods: In 2015, an electronic workforce survey was sent to the members of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on DBP and Council on Children with Disabilities and the Society for DBP. Answers from the 1998 survey for respondents with subspecialty fellowship training were compared. Results: Compared with the 1998 group of 265 DBPs, the 368 DBPs in the 2015 group were older, more female, and more dive...

Autism and Access to Care During the COVID-19 Crisis
CASE: Brian is a 6-year-old boy who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and global developmental delay at age 2. He has no other health conditions of note. Brian lives with his parents and an older brother, who also has ASD, in a rural area 2 hours from the center where he was diagnosed. Brian has a history of intermittent self-injurious behaviors (head-banging, throwing himself onto the floor, etc.) that regularly result in bruising, intense and lengthy tantrums, and aggression toward family and teachers. Brian will occasionally indicate items that he wants, but otherwise has no functional communication ...

Nutritional Rickets Due to Severe Food Selectivity in Autism Spectrum Disorder
Conclusion: This case exemplifies the extreme orthopedic and metabolic complications that can result from food selectivity in children with ASD, pointing to the need for further research into the prevalence and causes of orthopedic pathology and nutritional rickets in this population. The case also underscores the need for evidence-based guidelines to prevent orthopedic pathology in children with ASD. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Brief Report: What Diagnostic Observation Can Teach Us About Disruptive Behavior in Young Children with Autism
Conclusion: The use of a developmentally sensitive standardized observation tool that presses for DB to complement standardized observations such as the ADOS shows promise for enabling more precise research on targeted DB interventions. Such a tool holds promise as a reliable and efficient method of identifying comorbid DB disorders in the autism population. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

The Impact of Asymptomatic Congenital Cytomegalovirus on Adult Quality of Life
Conclusion: Adults born with AcCMV do not seem to have lower ratings of quality of life compared with uninfected controls. Although our study had small sample size, hearing loss does not seem to be a significant predictor of QOLI percentile scores among AcCMV subjects. Quality of life in adulthood does not seem to be affected by an individual's awareness of screening positive for CMV, which supports the notion of “no harm” occurring from universal newborn screening for congenital CMV infection. Child Temperament Outcomes After Laser Surgery for Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome
Conclusion: Despite varied in utero environments, no temperament differences between donor and recipient monozygotic twins were found for the population as a whole. This finding may be of some reassurance to parents whose pregnancies are complicated by TTTS. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Provider Responses to Positive Developmental Screening: Disparities in Referral Practices?
Conclusion: The finding that White children were more likely referred before developmental screening and non-White children more likely referred at the time of positive screen suggests that screening decreases disparities by increasing referral for children with developmental delays from traditionally underserved backgrounds. Factors Associated with Resilience in Families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Conclusion: The findings highlight specific vulnerabilities in families of children with ASD that are associated with low family resilience. Intervention approaches that have the ability to improve overall family resilience should be carefully considered. (Source: Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)
