A false sense of security: Rapid improvement as a red flag for death by suicide.
Conclusion: There are essential inpatient psychiatry clinical implications from this work, including that clinical providers should not be lulled into a false sense of security when hospitalized adults rapidly improve in terms of suicide ideation. Instead, inpatient psychiatric treatment teams should increase caution regarding the patient’s risk level and postdischarge treatment planning. The relation between the working alliance on mental illness and criminal thinking among justice-involved people with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders.
Conclusions: These findings expand the literature on the relation between working alliance and changes in mental illness symptoms by testing this association in the understudied population of justice-involved people with mental illness; these results also suggest the working alliance is associated with changes in criminal thinking. Treatment providers working with justice-involved people with mental illness should assess and emphasize the development of a working alliance to maximize treatment change. Individual differences in response to once versus twice weekly sessions of CBT and IPT for depression.
Conclusions: Although a higher session frequency is more effective on average, different session frequencies seem beneficial for different patients. Future studies should externally validate these findings before they can be generalized to other settings. Evidence-based tailoring of treatment to patients, providers, and processes: Introduction to the special issue.
Given the many evidence-supported psychotherapy interventions, and the fact that no single approach or therapist can successfully help all patients, in recent years, there has been a surge in studies focused on evidence-based methods of tailoring treatment to patients, providers, and processes. Although the field still has a long way to go in reliably mapping specific empirically supported avenues to personalized therapies, emerging results from this line of research underscore the potential for such optimization. In this vein, the articles in the special issue describe some of the most auspicious recent developments in th...

Racial discrimination, mental health symptoms, and intimate partner violence perpetration in Black adults.
This study had three goals: (a) to examine the association between racial discrimination and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration; (b) to determine whether this relationship is explained by mental health (MH) symptoms; and (c) to determine whether these associations vary by poverty status or gender. Methods: During the Wave 4 (2013–2017) visit of the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Longitudinal Study (HANDLS), Black adults who were in a relationship (N = 433; mean age = 55.26, SD = 9.30; 51% men) provided self-report data on IPV perpetration; frequency of racial discrimination; and levels of anxiety, ...

Internet-based CBT for somatic symptom distress (iSOMA) in emerging adults: A randomized controlled trial.
Objective: Persistent somatic symptom distress is common in emerging adults and is associated with adverse health outcomes and impairment. Internet-based interventions could help to prevent burden and chronicity. This randomized controlled trial tested the efficacy of a guided, cognitive-behavioral internet intervention for somatic symptom distress (iSOMA) in emerging adults at risk for somatic symptom disorder compared to a waitlist control condition. Method: 158 participants (N = 156 analyzed; 24.53 years, 83.3% female) with multiple somatic symptoms were recruited among German-speaking universities and randomly allocate...

A person-centered approach to understanding heterogeneity of youth receiving transdiagnostic treatment for emotional disorders.
Conclusions: Youth characterized by certain profiles of transdiagnostic core processes appear to have the poorest functioning and treatment prognosis, although most youth improved. Targeting these processes more directly and/or earlier in treatment may help to improve outcomes for youth. Dimensions of treatment engagement among youth and caregivers: Structural validity of the REACH framework.
Objective: Although the literature on treatment engagement varies in its characterization and enumeration of the relevant dimensions, the dimensionality of treatment engagement has yet to be tested empirically using a uniform measurement approach. We therefore examined the structural validity of a hypothesized five-factor model, using a confirmatory factor-analytic approach applied to youth and caregiver reports of their own perceived level of engagement. Method: Data were obtained from 1,807 primarily Hispanic American (56.0%) and African American/Black (26.3%) youth (Mage = 12.7; 46.8% female) and/or their caregivers par...

The temporal relationships between therapist adherence and patient outcomes in dialectical behavior therapy.
This study evaluated the temporal relationships between therapist adherence to DBT and patient outcomes, as well as potential moderators of these relationships. Method: Data were from six clinical trials conducted in research and community settings with a variety of patient populations. In these trials, trained observers rated 83 therapists for adherence during 1,262 DBT individual therapy sessions with 288 patients. Patient outcomes included suicide attempts, nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), treatment dropout, psychiatric hospitalizations, and global functioning. Longitudinal mixed-effects models evaluated the time-ordered...

Dose of psychotherapy and long-term recovery outcomes: An examination of attendance patterns in alcohol use disorder treatment.
Conclusions: With some exceptions, attending all sessions in CBT, TSF, and MET was related to the most favorable heavy drinking and alcohol-related consequences outcomes. Alcoholics’ Anonymous and other mutual help groups may be attended differently based on the form and dose of psychotherapy (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology)

Subtyping patients with binge-eating disorder by dietary restraint and negative affect: Characteristics and treatment outcome.
Conclusions: DR–HNA served as a predictor of poorer maintenance of BED therapeutic improvement. Future directions to better sustain outcomes among patients with DR–HNA include developing a brief measure to assess for the full construct of NA prior to and throughout treatment, enhancing BED interventions by focusing more on NA, and augmenting treatment dose. Effectiveness of the Body Project eating disorder prevention program for different racial and ethnic groups and an evaluation of the potential benefits of ethnic matching.
Conclusions: Results suggest that the Body Project produced relatively similar effects for racial/ethnic minority groups relative to White participants, that the effects were sometimes larger for Asian and Hispanic participants, and that recruiting Black participants at higher risk may contribute to larger effects for this racial group.
