Increasing Lung Cancer Screening for High-Risk Smokers in a Frontier Population
This study investigated methods to increase LDCT utilization through both a provider and community intervention to lower lung cancer mortality rates. This study used the Precaution Adoption Model for provider and community interventions implemented in four study regions in western South Dakota. The goal was to increase LDCT screening for eligible participants. Intake surveys and LDCT screenings were compared at baseline and 6  months following the education programs for both interventions. A total of 131 providers participated in the provider intervention. At the 6-month follow-up survey, 31 (63%) referred at least one pa...

Geriatric Communication Skills Training Program for Oncology Healthcare Providers: a Secondary Analysis of Patient and Caregiver Outcomes
AbstractGeriatric cancer patients and their caregivers have unique needs that make it difficult for their healthcare providers (HCPs) to effectively communicate with them. As ineffective communication can lead to negative health outcomes, it is important that oncology HCPs receive specialized training on communication with older adult patients and their caregivers. We conducted a small pilot study examining audio recordings of clinical encounters between HCPs and older adult cancer patients/caregivers and questionnaires completed by the patients and their caregivers before and after the HCPs participated in a geriatric com...

Impact of Practical Online Lessons on Chinese Medical Students ’ Perception of Radiation Oncology
This study introduced an hour-long online Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) as a supplement to the basic curriculum for 8-year medical students at Peking Union Medical College and Tsinghua University in China. The students ’ personal opinions and comprehension of radiation oncology therapy were assessed through pre- and post-test questionnaires before and after the MOOC study. The results indicated that the percentage of students interested in radiotherapy increased, and their knowledge of radiotherapy significantly improved after the online MOOC study, suggesting that short-term MOOC study may stimulate students’ inte...

Genomic Literacy among Nurses in Jordan: A Population-based Study
AbstractThe current study aimed to measure genomic literacy among Jordanian nurses by evaluating their understanding of key genomic concepts and how they view genomics in nursing practice. Descriptive, Cross-sectional, and Correlational designs were used in this study. A descriptive design was used using the Genomic Nursing Concept Inventory (GNCI ©), a 31-item instrument. Data were collected from a total of 751 participants. A total of 406 participants were female, and 395 (52.6%) were single. The mean score of the genome basics was 2.33, ranging from 0 to 13. The mean score of the knowledge about mutation was 0.57, rang...

Design and Implementation of a Multidisciplinary High-Fidelity Simulation Course for the Management of Malignant Spinal Cord Compression
AbstractHigh-fidelity simulation (HFS) training is suited to high-stakes, uncommon situations such as malignant spinal cord compression (MSCC), allowing for rare hands-on practice. This pilot study was created as the first of its kind to examine educational outcomes of a radiation therapist (RTT) –led multidisciplinary radiation oncology (RO) emergency simulation course. A multidisciplinary course design team composed of RO residents, radiation oncologists, RTT course instructors, and medical physicists created a high-fidelity MSCC simulation course using collaboratively developed learning goals. Fifteen learners includi...

Psychometric Validation of the Patient Anal Cancer Knowledge Scale (PACKS) in a Cohort of Black and Hispanic/Latino Sexual and Gender Diverse Young Adults
AbstractLack of anal cancer information in priority populations is a major barrier to the uptake and utilization of prevention services. A validated measure of anal cancer knowledge is needed to inform patient education and shared clinical decision-making for anal cancer prevention. The purpose of this study was to validate the Patient Anal Cancer Knowledge Scale (PACKS) in a sample of GBM, namely Black and Hispanic gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) and gender expansive young adults (aged 18 –30 years) living in the USA (N=188). Anal cancer knowledge was hypothesized as a 3-factor scale representin...

End-of-Life Care Education as Blended Learning Approach for  General Practitioners: a Scoping Review
AbstractGeneral practitioners (GPs) are critical in providing primary palliative care in the community. Apprehensions about managing a dying person at home, difficulties in goals of care discussion, limited resources and lack of palliative care education often hinder end-of-life care provision in the community. This review focused on the end-of-life care training programs accessed by GPs and sought to understand if the training programs ’ content and mode of delivery aligned with their preferred needs. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched to identify articles published in English between 01 January 1990 an...

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Breast Cancer Patients Toward Lymphedema Complications: Cross-Sectional Study
This study aims to investigate the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of breast cancer patients with regard to lymphedema complications. This cross-sectional study was conducted by a self-administered questionnaire between August and October 2022 toward breast cancer patients in our Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A total of 529 breast cancer patients were enrolled, including 186 (35.16%) aged <  50 years old. Participants had moderate knowledge, attitudes, and practices with scores of 18.24 ± 3.145 (possible range: 0–30), 62.24 ± 10.260 (possible range: 17–85), and 63.27 ± 20.967 ...

Florida-California Cancer Health Equity Center (CaRE2) Community Scientist Research Advocacy Program
AbstractThe Community Scientist Program (CSP), a model connecting researchers with community members, is effective to inform and involve the general population in health-related clinical research. Given the existing cancer disparities among Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino/a populations, more models describing howcancer-related CSPs are designed, implemented, and evaluated are needed. The Florida-California Cancer Research, Education and Engagement (CaRE2) Health Equity Center is a tri-institutional, bicoastal center created to eliminate cancer health disparities among Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino/a...

Effects of Psycho-education Interventions on Colorectal Cancer Patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractColorectal cancer (CRC) patients not only undergo physical symptoms but also psychological suffering. Psycho-education interventions have been implemented widely to improve their psychological well-being. However, the effectiveness of psycho-education is unclear. Therefore, this research evaluates the effectiveness of psycho-education interventions on CRC patient outcomes and identifies effective intervention characteristics. The researchers searched the following databases: PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, ProQuest, Wan Fang Data, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chine...

An Interactive Educational Tool to Improve Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Knowledge and Recommendation Among Nurses
AbstractIn United States, only 57% of   women and 53% of men in the recommended age groups have received all recommended doses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Healthcare provider education has been associated with strong vaccine recommendation and vaccination uptake. Our objective was to create a 7-min interactive online edu cational tool to improve knowledge and willingness to recommend the HPV vaccine among nurses. This is a prospective pre-test/post-test study to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational tool consisting of 10 flashcards in a question-answer format. Oncology nurses at our cancer center we...

Evaluation of the Quality and Comprehensiveness of YouTube Videos Discussing Pancreatic Cancer
AbstractPancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal diseases worldwide and incidence continues to rise, resulting in increased deaths each year. In the modern era, patients often turn to online sources like YouTube for information regarding their disease, which may be subject to a high degree of bias and misinformation; previous analyses have demonstrated low quality of other cancer-related YouTube videos. Thus, we sought to determine if patients can rely on educational YouTube videos for accurate and comprehensive information about pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment.  We designed a search query and inclusion/exclu...
