Seeking Racial Equity in Hematology and Oncology: a Fellow-Led Educational Series to Promote Reflection and Action
AbstractThe USA is experiencing a reckoning with racial injustice and graduate medical education programs are seeking ways to address this important topic in training. Adapting a Research and Community Capacity-Building Program to Address Rural Cancer Burden and Facilitate Partnership Development Between Rural Community Stakeholders and an Urban Comprehensive Cancer Center
AbstractWhile rural –urban cancer disparities persist, the research building capacity between rural communities and high-quality cancer centers remains limited. Thus, we describe how a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center partnered with rural community stakeholders to adapt a cancer prevention-focused r esearch and community capacity-building workshop. The workshop’s goal was to strengthen community-academic partnerships and facilitate the development of sustainable well-resourced rural cancer-focused research. Researchers from the Siteman Cancer Center partnered with community leaders from rural counties...

Patient Understanding of Chemotherapy and Goals of Care as Provided by Different Care Team Members
Abstract Chemotherapy can be challenging and overwhelming for patients, but when patients are knowledgeable about chemotherapy, their comfort level, overall satisfaction, and coping improve. It is currently unknown whether patients prefer information about chemotherapy to be provided by specific care team members and whether demographic characteristics affect learning preferences. We developed a 31-question questionnaire that asked patients when chemotherapy information was discussed and who they wanted that information to come from. The questionnaire was given to 50 patients who had completed 1 cycle of chemotherapy. P...

Exploring Brachytherapy Discharge Educational Needs of Gynecological Cancer Patients
AbstractBrachytherapy (BT) plays a fundamental role in the treatment of gynecological cancers. Patient education for vaginal self-management and dilator use post-BT involves an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals (HCPs) and there is a paucity of post-BT education guidelines. Our objective was to determine the educational needs of gynecological cancer patients surrounding vaginal self-management post-BT and to determine enablers and barriers to the provision of education by HCPs. This cross-sectional study recruited gynecological oncology patients receiving external beam radiotherapy and BT for curative inten...
