Learning Outcomes of “GetSMART,” Education for Diagnostics and Targeted Treatment for HER2+ Metastatic Gastric and Colorectal Cancers
AbstractThe treatment landscape for patients affected by gastric and colorectal cancer (G&CRC) has significantly broadened over the past decade. Molecular diagnostic methods have improved with a precision oncology-driven approach to the development of treatment options tailored to specific molecular targets, including the human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2). While scientific evidence on the role of HER2 in G&CRC has improved, there has been a lag in general understanding and applications of testing for HER2+ G&CRC and resulting targeting treatment in the wider oncology community. To better understand and add...

Caring for an Individual with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): Understanding Family Caregivers ’ Perceptions of Social Support, Caregiver Burden, and Unmet Support Needs
AbstractFamily caregivers (FCs) of a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) can encounter unpredictable challenges and care demands. They can experience high levels of burden, a loss of self-care, and poor quality of life. Their receipt of social support and ability to communicate with clinicians may impact their burden. FCs would benefit from educational resources that teach them communication skills central to their ability to obtain the support they need —support that is imperative to reducing burden. To better target psychosocial educational interventions focused on social support and communication skills, w...

Impact of the Integrative Oncology Scholars Program on Oncology Providers ’ Key Knowledge of Dietary Supplements and Antioxidants for Providing Evidence-based Oncology Care
AbstractDietary supplements are commonly used among cancer survivors. Oncology providers rarely receive training about dietary supplements. We evaluated whether e-learning modules could improve oncology providers ’ dietary supplement knowledge. Oncology providers participated in the National Cancer Institute funded Integrative Oncology Scholars (IOS) program. We used posttest readiness assurance tests (RAT) to measure knowledge acquisition from modules. One cohort completed a pre and posttest RAT to assess change in knowledge. Multivariate linear regression models adjusted for gender, race, profession, and years in pract...
