Cancer Screening and Treatment Delays During the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Role of Health Literacy in Care Re-engagement: Findings from an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center sample
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has led to numerous delays in cancer-related care and cancer-specific screening, but the extent is not fully understood. For those that experience a delay or disruption in care, health related self-management is required to re-engage in care pathways and the role of health literacy in this pathway has not been explored. The purpose of this analysis is to (1) report the frequency of self-reported delays in cancer treatment and preventative screening services at an academic, NCI-designated center during the COVID-19 pandemic and (2) investigate cancer-related care and screening delays among ...

Despite modifications and expenditure growth in the Polish health care system, oncological treatment outcomes are lower comparing to the other European Union countries. Early preventative interventions are effective in reducing the total number of cancers and improving early detection. Onko Logika is an educational campaign launched in 2016 by the Comprehensive Cancer Centre, aimed at improving cancer awareness. One hundred and twenty students from 25 high schools of the Low...

Institutional barriers to clinical trial exploration experienced by the Latinx community
AbstractThis study evaluated two types of barriers that the authors deemed important to resolve during the early stage of cancer clinical trial exploration by Latinx community members. One was the accessibility of information provided on cancer centers ’ websites. The other was the telephone responders’ clinical trial knowledge and their conveyance of a warm welcome to Latinx callers inquiring about the centers’ clinical trials. Simulated clinical trial inquiry calls were made to 17 National Cancer Institute-designated centers in this study. The centers were located in cities where the Latinx community accounted ...

Diabetes and Cancer Co-management Education: Leveraging the Patient Activated Learning System (PALS) for Patients with Breast Cancer
AbstractMore than 70% of cancer patients have one or more comorbid conditions, and diabetes is one of the most common and burdensome comorbidities. However, existing patient-centered education materials often fail to acknowledge how to co-manage cancer and diabetes, leaving patients feeling overwhelmed and searching for guidance. Our team sought to fill this knowledge gap by using the Patient Activated Learning System (PALS), a patient-centered, publicly available platform, to generate patient-centered education materials about co-managing diabetes and cancer. Using insights from 15 patient interview transcripts, we develo...
