Impact of a Cancer Health Education Curriculum Among Milwaukee Public High School Students
This study implemented a cancer health education curriculum (CHEC) at a Milwaukee public high school with the goal of addressing cancer knowledge, fear and fatalism beliefs, and risk behaviors. The curriculum included interactive learning sessions and a service-learning final project. Five-hundred twenty-one students also completed pre- and post-surveys assessing cancer knowledge, fear and fatalism, risk behaviors, cancer-related communication, and a qualitative question asking what they hoped to gain (pre) or did gain (post) from the course. Results indicate (1) a significant improvement in cancer knowledge (p <  0...

A Vocation of Palliation
AbstractI consider myself a “late bloomer,” since I never encountered the practice of palliative care during medical school in the Philippines, nor during my internal medicine residency in the USA. It was 3 years into my first job after finishing residency, working both as a hospitalist and an urgent care physician, when I came to an early morning session on end-of-life care at a large medical society meeting. That talk changed my life. I now see palliative care as being more than a “profession” or a “medical specialty.” It is my vocation, as serendipitous events called me into this line of work. For more th a...

Physical Activity in Oncology: To Do, Not to Do, and How to Do It? An Announcement of an Educational Program
AbstractThe National Cancer Institute of Aviano, Italy, recently launched a new program to educate the cancer population, bringing patients as close as possible to the world of physical activity during the cancer rehabilitation phase. A personalized assessment of the patient using the latest technologies allows to create a personalized electronic record of the state of physical performance to be shared among the patient, the staff at the institute (including the medical doctors and physiotherapists in charge), and the fitness instructors, who deal with of the recovery tasks. The outcome of the program can allow the develop...

Social Appropriation of Knowledge About Research in Prostate Cancer with Middle Education Students in Three Colombian Cities
AbstractIn Colombia, prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer for incidence and mortality in men, which turns it into a public health problem. For high-risk communities to better understand the usefulness of basic research about PCa, a strategy of social appropriation of knowledge (SAK) in science and cancer was designed and implemented. A pedagogical activity and two tests (a pre-test and a post-test) were applied to middle education students in four schools in three Colombian cities to identify previous knowledge of biology concepts and cancer perceptions. As for biology concepts, there was a statistically signifi...

Can Cancer Education Programs Improve Health Literacy Among Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patients: a Systematic Review
AbstractPatients affected from hearing loss face many problems when visiting oncologists. We conducted a systematic review to survey if cancer education programs can promote health literacy among deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) patients. The authors searched two databases for RCTs, and cohort studies with interventions promoting cancer health literacy for adult DHH patients. Risk of bias was assessed with SIGN Methodology Checklist for RCTs, and cohort studies. Significance of mean changes over time, and mean differences between comparison groups were used to present outcomes of each study. Surveyed interventions addressed ...

Beliefs Underlying Colorectal Cancer Information Seeking Among Young Black Adults: a Reasoned Action Approach Elicitation Study
AbstractColorectal cancer in younger adults is more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage. Furthermore, younger Black adults are more likely to be diagnosed with and die from colorectal cancer than younger White adults. Given these persistent racial disparities, urgent attention is needed to increase colorectal cancer awareness and information seeking among young Black adults. Guided by the reasoned action approach, the purpose of this study was to identify behavioral, normative, and control beliefs that influence general colorectal cancer information seeking, talking to a healthcare provider about colorectal cancer,...

A Bioinformatic Approach to Enhance Undergraduate Student Understanding of the Cancer-Immunity Cycle
This study introduces a novel pedagogical strategy that aimed to promote undergraduate student interest in tumor immunology in ways that support recent education guidelines published by the American Association of Immunologists, and it highlights the efficacy of this approach in enhancing student understanding of concepts relevant to the Cancer-Immunity Cycle. Using RNA-sequencing data obtained from clinical specimens catalogued in The Cancer Genome Atlas, students performed Kaplan –Meier survival analyses to identify Cancer-Immunity Cycle genes with prognostic significance. After correlating expression of such genes wit...

Radiation Oncology Virtual Education Rotation (ROVER) 2.0 for Residents: Implementation and Outcomes
We report outcomes from Radiation Oncology Virtual Education Rotation (ROVER) 2.0, a supplementary virtual educational curriculum created for radiation oncology residents globally. A prospective cohort of residents completed surveys before and after the live virtual webinar sessions (pre- and post-surveys, respectively). Live sessions were structured as complex gray-zone cases across various core disease sites. Resident demographics and responses were summarized using means, standard deviations, and proportions. Nine ROVER sessions were held from October 2020 to June 2021. A total of 1487 registered residents completed the...

Implementation During a Pandemic: Findings, Successes, and Lessons Learned from Community Grantees
AbstractFunding communities through mini-grant programs builds community capacity by fostering leadership among community members, developing expertise in implementing evidence-based practices, and increasing trust in partnerships. The South Carolina Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (SC-CPCRN) implemented the Community Health Intervention Program (CHIP) mini-grants initiative to address cancer-related health disparities among high-risk populations in rural areas of the state. One community-based organization and one faith-based organization were funded during the most recent call for proposals. The organizati...

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Education and Knowledge Among Medical and Dental Trainees
The objectives of this study were to (1) assess medical and dental trainees’ baseline knowledge regarding HPV and HPV vaccine, (2) determine the willingness to recommend the HPV vaccine to patients, and (3) evaluate the i mpact of an online intervention on HPV-related knowledge. Medical and dental trainees from two large academic centers in the USA were asked to fill out an online pre-intervention questionnaire, followed by a 10-min HPV educational intervention based on the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (C DC) resources, and then a post-intervention questionnaire. There were 75 participants (67.4% females; med...
