Effectiveness of Interventions to Improve Oral Cancer Knowledge: a Systematic Review
AbstractOral cancer is prone to late-stage diagnosis, and subsequent low five-year survival rates. A small number of interventions or campaigns designed to enhance knowledge of risk factors and symptoms associated with oral cancer have been attempted in the UK, US, and some other countries. The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the effectiveness of interventions designed to improve oral cancer knowledge. We searched five databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized/quasi-experimental (NR/QE) studies targeting the general population or high-risk groups (tobacco users or alcohol c...

Developing an Education Pathway for Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Rapid Diagnostic Testing: Investigating Informational and Supportive Care Needs
AbstractSeveral studies have examined the informational needs of patients undergoing the breast diagnostic process where needs are highest during testing and prior to receiving a diagnosis. To aid in the development of an education pathway, we identified patient information needs. A multi-method approach to identify areas of need and to understand when and how information should be provided to patients was undertaken. The methods included an environmental scan of consumer health information, ethnographic observation of the patient clinical experience, key informant interviews, and a needs assessment survey. The data collec...

Standardizing Research Training: a Pilot Curriculum Within a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program
AbstractWhile scholarly activity is recognized as critical in cancer education, there is an outstanding need for methods to define research learning competencies and tools for formal research productivity and competency assessment. We piloted and studied a novel educational initiative within the University of Wisconsin Hematology/Oncology fellowship program, establishing a professional learning community (PLC) of research mentors and developing a formative evaluation tool, a research portfolio. We developed a PLC engaged in reflective conversations about intended learning outcomes and effective instructional strategies. Su...

A Reflection on the Tensions of Acting in Dual Roles of Doctoral Researcher and Practitioner when Evaluating a Lifestyle Intervention for Breast Cancer Patients
This article uses the experience, reflection, action (ERA) cycle of reflection to consider some of the tensions faced due to the divergent priorities and requirements of these two roles. One challenge occurred during study recruitment when a few potential participants did not meet the inclusion criteria for the study but still wished to attend the intervention sessions. It was also a challenge to mitigate the risks of distress of potentially vulnerable participants during group intervention sessions. In both instances there was a potential conflict between the needs of patients and research requirements. This reflection co...

Putting the Heme Back in Heme-Onc: an Evaluation of the Redesigned Hematology Track within the Dana Farber/Mass General Brigham Hematology-Oncology Fellowship
AbstractIn 2019, the Dana Farber/Mass General Brigham Hematology-Oncology Fellowship redesigned the 6-month Hematology training track/curriculum required for all fellows seeking to double board in hematology and oncology. Responding to both national and local trends suggesting a future shortage of hematologists, the goal of the redesign was to create a new curriculum that would increase fellow interest in hematology, improve fellows ’ clinical knowledge of hematology, and serve as an example to other Hematology-Oncology programs across the country. The revised track has now been in place for four years, and, in this pape...

Near-Peer Teaching in Radiation Oncology: a Proof of Principle Study for Learning Treatment Planning
AbstractRadiotherapy techniques are expanding in range and complexity; therefore, protecting learning environments where residents nurture treatment planning skills is critical. The evidence base for ‘near-peer’ teaching (NPT), where professionals at a similar career stage assist in each other’s learning, is growing in hospital-based disciplines, but has not been reported in radiation oncology. The feasibility of a resident-led teaching programme for developing treatment planning skills wa s investigated herein with quality improvement (QI) methodology. Following consultation with attendings (n = 10) and all resi...

In the Words of My Mother: “I’m fighting hard for me but mostly for you”
AbstractI have always been interested in health information —what it is, where people get it, how they interpret it, talk about it with others, and use it—if at all. It has been overwhelming to stay abreast of the evolving science during the COVID-19 global pandemic when it is often quite complicated in nature and when we are exposed to individuals’ an d group’s spreading of misinformation and disinformation. During this pandemic, I have been reflecting a lot on my childhood during which my mother was suffering with cancer and frustrated and confused about the information she received regarding her diagnosis and tr...
