Standardized risk-based antibiotic prophylaxis and adhesive film dressing for the prevention of wound infection following cochlear implantation
CONCLUSION: Standardized risk-based AP can avoid prolonged administration of antibiotics in selected patients. The film dressing permits continual examination and sufficient wound protection.PMID:38280932 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-024-01423-0 (Source: HNO)

Digital competencies in medical studies: results of an interdisciplinary course
CONCLUSION: The interdisciplinary design of the course promotes exchange between students and teachers and creates synergies. The modular format of the course also allows for current topics, such as generative AI, to be addressed. In order to promote digital competencies among all students of human medicine, it is necessary to integrate the topics into the mandatory curriculum.PMID:38265753 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01411-w (Source: HNO)

High interaction potential of online-only courses with breakout sessions-results of a  pilot study
CONCLUSION: Online-only FC designs can result in high satisfaction. High quality of online preparation, a solid technical platform, accurate time management, and a reasonable selection of topics are the main parameters contributing to successful course design. Nowadays, embedding medical imaging can be realized in appropriate quality for educational purposes. The implementation of breakout sessions and voting tools enables collaborative online learning with high levels of interaction and satisfaction for both teachers and students.PMID:38260983 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01407-6 (Source: HNO)

The "difficult" patient-pearls and pitfalls of vestibular diagnostic tests: Part  2 : Difficult aspects of vestibular laboratory testing
HNO. 2024 Feb;72(2):129-140. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01401-y. Epub 2024 Jan 23.ABSTRACTPatients with the cardinal symptoms "vertigo" or "dizziness" may be a real challenge for the treating otorhinolaryngologist. While the first part of this educational series was focused on history taking and bedside neurotological examination, the present paper is devoted to difficult aspects of vestibular laboratory testing, including getting the indication right, what to do if my patient is not able to fully cooperate during the tests, how to choose the adequate diagnostic procedure depending on the patient's comorbidities, how to inter...

Providing practical skills in curricular teaching-effect of SkillsLab and flipped classroom
CONCLUSION: Combination of digitized teaching in the flipped classroom with structured workstations in the setting of a SkillsLab enables more effective teaching of practical skills, which was reflected by increases in motivation and subjective competence in group B. In particular, the presentation of all collected findings on monitors allows verification of learning success and stimulates discussion.PMID:38224355 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01408-5 (Source: HNO)

Inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses : Diagnosis, treatment, and malignant transformation
HNO. 2024 Jan 12. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01406-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInverted papilloma (IP) are benign tumors that show a locally aggressive behavior, a high rate of recurrence, and a potential for malignant transformation. Specific radiological signs such as hyperostosis at the origin of the IP and convoluted cerebriform patterns, as well as the typical endoscopic aspect, can lead to diagnosis and enable preoperative planning of surgical access and the extent of surgery. Endonasal endoscopic techniques are considered the gold standard and the introduction of extended surgical techniques such as the prelacrima...

Combination of nivolumab with standard induction chemotherapy in children and adults with EBV-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma : Protocol of a  prospective multicenter phase 2 trial
DISCUSSION: As cure rates in localized EBV-positive NPC today are high with standard multimodal treatment, the focus increasingly shifts toward prevention of late effects, the burden of which is exceptionally high, mainly due to intense radiotherapy. Furthermore, survival in patients with metastatic disease and resistant to conventional chemotherapy remains poor. Primary objective of this study is to investigate whether the addition of nivolumab to standard induction chemotherapy in children and adults with EBV-positive NPC is able to increase the rate of complete responses, thus enabling a reduction in radiation dose in m...

Choanal atresia repair in Germany : Resection of dorsal septal parts and stents in focus
CONCLUSION: Endoscopic endonasal choanal atresia repair with resection of dorsal septal parts is, in most instances, used as the standard technique in large ENT hospitals in Germany. Routine use of stents is still widespread. The future aim should be to reduce the use of stents in the treatment of choanal atresia and to use this method only in difficult, individual cases.PMID:38189815 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01410-x (Source: HNO)

Increase in the natural hearing threshold after treatment with cochlear implants
HNO. 2024 Jan 5. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01398-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMore than 5% of the world's population suffers from disabling hearing loss. If the cause of hearing loss is unclear, it is referred to as idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). After failure of standard treatment, the use of hearing aids or a cochlear implant is generally recommended. In this case, a 55-year-old patient was treated with cochlear implantation (CI) after ISSNHL and unsuccessful conservative therapy. Approximately 1 year after implantation and 7 years after the sudden hearing loss, subjective measurements revealed ...

Repetitio est mater studiorum-implementation of ENT cases in case-based e-learning
CONCLUSION: The teaching content of otorhinolaryngology can be implemented sufficiently in case-based e‑learning and is characterized by satisfactory student acceptance. Integration should be accomplished in a high-quality manner to increase motivation and interest in otorhinolaryngology.PMID:38180480 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01409-4 (Source: HNO)
