[Evaluation of the perceptual equivalence of test lists in the Freiburg monosyllabic speech test].
In this study, therefore, the perceptual equivalence of test lists was verified with a large group of participants according to the standard ISO EN 8253-3. METHODS: A total of 160  suitable otologically normal subjects were recruited at two institutions, each of whom listened to all test lists of the FBE using predefined measurement conditions. The subjects were divided in three groups depending on the transducer used for test list presentation (headphones "HDA 200" and "TDH 39", as well as free-field loudspeaker, "FF"). Lists that deviated were identified usi...

This article presents the case of an IgG4-related disease in a patient with clinical signs of a malignant tumor of the oral cavity. Values of SP-A protein in the nasal mucosa.
Values of SP-A protein in the nasal mucosa. HNO. 2016 Jul 15; Authors: Passali D, Astore S, Boccuzzi S, Loglisci M, Cannatelli A, Passali GC, Bellussi L Abstract The paranasal sinus epithelium is exposed to the environment and therefore to a variety of biological, chemical and mechanical insults. Surfactant protein A (SP-A) is a 34-36 kD pulmonary surfactant-associated protein that appears to play an important role in mammalian first-line host defence. Recent studies have reported the possibility of local production of SP-A in the extrapulmonary organs and tissues of the human ...

[Pathogenesis and molecular pathology of vestibular schwannoma].
Authors: Brodhun M, Stahn V, Harder A Abstract Schwannomas are benign Schwann cell-derived tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath often involving the vestibular cranial nerve (vestibular schwannoma). Histologically, they consist of bipolar spindle cells and show a moderate cellularity. Typically, Antoni A regions with a storiform pattern and loose Antoni B regions are intermingled. Verocay bodies are the pathognomonic palisading structures. Malignant transformation is rare. Merlin (schwannomin), the protein product of NF2, is inactivated by mutations, loss of heterozygosity or methylati...

[Surgical simulation on the lateral skull base].
Authors: Stenin I, Kristin J, Klenzner T, Schipper J Abstract Critical neurovascular structures are confined in a small bony space at the lateral skull base. Thus, high quality of surgical training and planning of minimally invasive procedures is crucial. Simulation of lateral skull base procedures can improve motor skills, anatomical orientation, and complication management in a safe environment. Thus, simulation training can be beneficial for skull base surgeons. Minimally invasive interventions at the lateral skull base are under research, and several authors have presented approaches through single or...

[The Freiburg monosyllable word test in postoperative cochlear implant diagnostics].
CONCLUSION: The Freiburg monosyllable word test can be performed successfully by the majority of CI patients. The limited balance of the test lists elicits the conclusion that an adaptive test procedure with the Freiburg monosyllable test does not make sense. The Freiburg monosyllable test can be restructured by resorting all words across lists, or by omitting individual words of a test list to increase the reliability of the test. The results show that speech intelligibility in quiet should also be investigated in CI recipients al levels below 70 dB. PMID: 27393292 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: HNO)

[Computer-controlled high-precision radiation].
Authors: Rueß D, Kocher M, Treuer H, Ruge MI Abstract The irradiation of tumors in the brain is challenging due to the proximity of radiation sensitive critical structures and the tumors to be treated. In addition, irradiation above a certain level can cause irreversible damage to nerve tissue. The irradiation of benign and malignant brain tumors requires precise techniques to preserve critical structures while simultaneously administering a high radiation dose for maximum effectiveness. Therefore, stereotaxy, as a subspecialty of neurosurgery, has developed various irradiation techniques, e. g...

[Olfactory dysfunction : Update on diagnosis and treatment].
Authors: Kühn M, Abolmaali N, Smitka M, Podlesek D, Hummel T Abstract Olfactory dysfunction is a common disorder, particularly in elderly people. From the etiologic point of view, we distinguish between sinunasal and non-sinunasal causes of dysosmia. As an important early symptom of neurodegenerative disease, dysosmia is particularly relevant in the diagnosis of Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease. In addition to complete ENT examination and olfactory testing, e.g., with "Sniffin' Sticks", modern imaging procedures, e. g. MRI, are becoming more and more important for diagnostics, prognosis...

[Pathophysiology of hearing loss : Classification and treatment options].
Authors: Kral A Abstract From the therapeutic perspective, the etiology and pathophysiology of hearing loss can be classified based on the extent of the primary cause. Hearing loss can have very different consequences for cell preservation in the organ of Corti and the spiral ganglion. These not only have implications for prosthetic therapy outcome, but may also influence the potential for future causal molecular therapies. Etiologies leading to deficits that are limited to one or a few molecules without having an effect on cell survival have the greatest potential for future causal therapy using molecular and...

Beside acoustic gain measurements and structured interviews, speech audiometry in quiet and in noise is one of the three pillars of hearing aid evaluation. The Freiburg monosyllabic test has been used for decades for hearing aid prescription and evaluation in German speaking countries. Relative and absolute targets can be individually defined for the rehabilitation of speech perception by hearing aids as assessed by the Freiburg mon...

Palliative treatment standards for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma : Survey of clinical routine in German-speaking countries.
CONCLUSION: Palliative systemic therapy seems to be well standardized for first-line treatment, whereas there is little standardization in second- and third-line treatments. A large variation was found regarding the estimate of the applicability of the institutional standard. Reasons for this could be the physicians' individual experience as well as the varying assessment regarding the toxicity of palliative systemic therapy. [Use of Freiburg monosyllabic test words in the contemporary German language : Currentness of the test words].

The median distributions of word frequency ranking in contemporary language of nine test lists deviate significantly from the overall median of all 400 monosyllables. Lists 1, 6, 9, 10, and 17 include significantly more very rarely used words; lists 2, 3, 5, and 15, include significantly more very frequently used words.
