[Rehabilitation of facial palsy and vertigo in patients with vestibular schwannoma].
CONCLUSION: There are several conservative, surgical, or combined conservative-surgical treatment options for individualized facial nerve rehabilitation of VS patients, as confirmed by clinical studies. In cases of acute vertigo, standard antivertiginous pharmacotherapy is indicated. In cases of acute and also of chronic vertigo, intensive balance and movement training relieves complaints. Adenosine-mediated immunosuppression in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
Authors: Mandapathil M Abstract This review article describes the potential role of ectonucleotidase activity, adenosine metabolism, and the adenosinergic signaling pathway in the suppression of the host immune system in patients with head and neck cancer. Identifying such mechanisms leads to a better understanding of immunosuppressive mechanisms in this patient population. Further, potential targets for immunotherapy in an adjuvant approach to treating squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck in the future might be identified and improve the prognosis of these patients. [Diagnosis of auditory processing disorders in children].
Authors: Ptok M, Miller S, Kühn D Abstract Despite normal hearing thresholds in pure tone audiometry, 0.5-1 % of children have difficulty understanding what they hear. An auditory processing disorder (APD) can be assumed, which should be clarified and treated. Based on a selective literature search in the PubMed and Scopus databases using the term "auditory processing disorder", several consensus papers are discussed. Numerous studies on APD have revealed partially contradicting results, thus fueling critical discussion regarding validity and reliability-of specific audiometric APD methods and...

Authors: Bozzato V, Bumm K, Gärtner H, Schneider MH, Schwerdtfeger P, Sittel C, Schick B Abstract BACKGROUND: The utilization of craniofacial prosthesis has proven to be very successful for craniofacial defects. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the value of an epithesis for voice rehabilitation in patients with tracheostomy. The aim of this study was to describe application of the tracheostomy epithesis and to present a systematic analysis of the functional results of this prosthetic technique. [Is (chemo)radiotherapy really the future standard in the treatment of oropharyngeal carcinoma?]
Authors: Knecht R, Bussmann L, Möckelmann N, Lörincz BB Abstract Treatment of patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) requires interdisciplinary collaboration. Besides oncologic control, organ and function preservation are important priorities. One treatment option is primary concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CRT), particularly for locally advanced head and neck cancer. Another option is sequential CRT, where induction chemotherapy may be followed either by radiation alone or by CRT. An important aspect of these modalities is the development of functional sequelae with regards to swallowi...

[Hydropic inner ear disease of the vestibular type].
We report the case of a patient with episodic rotational vertigo for years. Ear symptoms were negated. The clinical diagnosis was not clear - Menière's disease, vestibular migraine and recurrent vertigo after vestibular neuritis all qualified for differential diagnoses. A locally enhanced inner-ear MRI established clarity by showing an endolymphatic hydrops in the vestibulum. Besides the classical triad of Menière's disease there are other clinical appearances of endolymphatic hydrops, which can be visualized with inner-ear MRI. Treatment in elderly patients with head and neck cancer : A challenging dilemma.
Treatment in elderly patients with head and neck cancer : A challenging dilemma. Owing to comorbidities, elderly patients often need complex evaluation and pretreatment management, which often results in their exclusion from clinical trials. In 2011 the incidence of tumors of the oral cavity and pharynx in Germany was 6839 (5026 male and 1813 female) and of the larynx 1878 (1642 male and 236 female). The incidence of tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses (467) and salivary glands (470) were much lower ( www.krebsdaten.de/abfrage ). By testing the prevalence of specific anosmia to 20 different odors in a sample of 1600 people, we were able to estimate the general prevalence of anosmia. This revealed that specific anosmia is not rare at all. In contrast, the general likelihood for specific anosmia approaches 1. [Lymphatic malformations in the head and neck area].
Authors: Wiegand S, Werner JA Abstract Lymphatic malformations are congenital malformations of the lymphatic system. They are mainly located in the head and neck area, and grow proportional to the patients' body growth. Depending on the morphology, it can be distinguished between macrocystic, microcystic and mixed lymphatic malformations. Due to their infiltrative growth, microcystic lymphatic malformations are particularly difficult to treat. Therapeutic approaches include conventional surgical resection, laser therapy, sclerotherapy and systemic drug therapies. PMID: 26820157 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: HNO)

[The role of microRNAs in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma : Biomarkers for prognosis, therapy selection, and novel therapeutics].
Authors: Heß AK, Weichert W, Budach V, Tinhofer I Abstract Despite recent advances in radiochemotherapy, treatment of locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is still challenging, and survival rates have improved only slightly. This is due to the high frequency of metastases and local and/or regional tumor recurrences that have acquired radio- or chemoresistance. MiRNAs regulate diverse processes in tumorigenesis, metastasis, and therapy resistance in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Hence, miRNAs are highly valued in biomarker studies. In combination with high-resolution image recording and reproduction (high-definition television, HDTV; ultra-high definition, 4K), progress has been made in otolaryngological differential diagnostics, both pre- and intraoperatively. Comprehensive knowledge of the clinical signs of the most common primary headaches, e. g. migraine, is therefore essential for the ENT specialist because the few patients with secondary headache from ENT-related causes must be identified. Reasons for confusing primary headache with e. g. sinusitis are mostly symptoms mediated by the trigeminal nerve, such as nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea because ...
