Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with head and neck cancer in Brandenburg and Berlin
CONCLUSION: Contrary to initial speculation that the COVID-19 pandemic may have led to a decrease in tumour cases, larger tumour stages at initial presentation and a delay in diagnosis and treatment, the cohort studied for Brandenburg and Berlin showed neither a delay in tumour treatment nor an increase in tumour size and stage at initial presentation. The treatments performed, however, were subject to a change in favour of surgery and it remains to be seen whether this trend will be maintained in the long term.PMID:38117331 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01396-6 (Source: HNO)

Development and evaluation of ultrasound navigation for free-hand biopsies of small masses in the head and neck area
CONCLUSION: Outstanding advantages compared to conventional navigation systems include renunciation of preoperative tomographic imaging, automatic three-dimensional real-time registration that considers intraoperative tissue displacements, maintenance of the surgeon's optical axis at the surgical site without having to look at a navigation monitor, and working freely with both hands without holding the ultrasound scanner during biopsy taking. The described functional model can also be used in open head and neck surgery.PMID:38051313 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01385-9 (Source: HNO)

Combined therapy of severe obstructive sleep apnea
HNO. 2023 Dec 5. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01394-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObstructive sleep apnea is the most common breathing-related sleep disorder. The spectrum of therapy is wide ranging. The symptom of persistent daytime sleepiness can be an important indicator for reviewing the existing treatment. If polygraphic monitoring shows inadequate treatment under ongoing therapy, a combination of therapies should be considered.PMID:38051314 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01394-8 (Source: HNO)
