Built and natural environment correlates of physical activity of adults living in rural areas: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Research investigating the relationship between the built and natural environment and PA behaviors of adults living in rural areas is still limited and there is a need for more high-quality and longitudinal studies. However, our most positive findings indicate that investing in places for exercise and recreation, a safe infrastructure for active transport, and nature-based activities are possible strategies that should be considered to address low levels of PA in rural adults.TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO: CRD42021283508.PMID:38702772 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-024-01598-3 (Source: Health Physics)

Validity and Reliability of Dynamic and Functional Balance Tests in People Aged 19-54: A Systematic Review
In conclusion, the Y-Balance Test stands out as the most practical dynamic balance assessment for clinical use, characterized by a standardized protocol, good repeatability, affordability, and ease of application. The Nintendo Wii Balance Board also presents itself as a cost-effective and reliable tool for dynamic balance evaluation in clinical settings. It is crucial to recognize that these tests appraise discrete postural skills, preventing direct comparisons between test outcomes. This review equips healthcare professionals with valuable insights into optimal balance assessment methods for the healthy, 19 to 54 aged pop...

Bicycling for Rehabilitation of Persons With Parkinson Disease: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: The literature on bicycling for PwPD has evolved from speed to aerobic studies. The terminology describing types of bicycling was simplified. Of all the outcomes reported, reduction of disease severity achieved the highest frequency of clinical meaningful improvements. Bicycling was comparable with other forms of aerobic training for walking speed and endurance. Opportunities for translation to practice and research are presented.VIDEO ABSTRACT AVAILABLE: for more insights from the authors (see the Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1 available at: http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A462).PMID:38693613 | DOI:10.1097/N...

Training effect of repeated rolling motions on boccia players with severe cerebral palsy: comparison with the effect of conventional upper-limb training using a crossover test
Conclusion] Collectively, interval rolling training is more effective than upper limb training in improving the physical function and throwing distance of boccia players with severe cerebral palsy.PMID:38694004 | PMC:PMC11060762 | DOI:10.1589/jpts.36.245 (Source: Health Physics)

Effectiveness of comparing calf circumference with neck circumference regarding their association with skeletal muscle indices in Japanese nursing home residents
Conclusion] This study showed that phase angle and muscle mass were associated with calf circumference, but not with neck circumference, in Japanese nursing home residents. Therefore, calf circumference is important in clinical evaluations as a potential screening tool for nursing home residents with various diseases.PMID:38694005 | PMC:PMC11060766 | DOI:10.1589/jpts.36.240 (Source: Health Physics)

Seasonal changes in daily steps of community-dwelling older individuals with and without lifestyle-related diseases: a retrospective cohort study
Conclusion] Compared with healthy older individuals, in older persons with diseases, physical activity was lower year-round among males and in November and December among females. Separate daily step count goals may be required for health maintenance in both sexes. It is important to determine the daily steps necessary to prevent various diseases and mitigate their severity while maintaining physical activity among older persons with diseases.PMID:38694007 | PMC:PMC11060769 | DOI:10.1589/jpts.36.252 (Source: Health Physics)

Efficacy of ultrasound therapy with neck retraction exercises vs. ultrasound therapy with deep cervical flexor training for excessive screen time users: a pilot randomized controlled study
Conclusion] Ultrasound therapy with neck retraction exercises could have a more positive effect on pain, forward head posture, and strength of the deep cervical flexor muscles in comparison to ultrasound therapy with deep cervical flexor training for excessive screen time users.PMID:38694008 | PMC:PMC11060765 | DOI:10.1589/jpts.36.303 (Source: Health Physics)

The effects of resistance exercise and leucine-enriched essential amino acid supplementation on muscle mass and physical function in post-gastrectomy patients: a pilot randomized controlled trial
Conclusion] We failed to detect a significant difference in muscle mass due to resistance exercise with LEAA supplementation in post-gastrectomy patients. However, resistance exercise with LEAA supplementation might be beneficial for muscle strength recovery and QOL improvements.PMID:38694013 | PMC:PMC11060767 | DOI:10.1589/jpts.36.218 (Source: Health Physics)

Effect of repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation of the common fibular nerve on the soleus muscle Hoffmann reflex
Conclusion] The change in the Hoffmann reflex amplitude may have been caused by the magnetic stimulation to I-a sensory fibers on the common fibular nerve, suggesting that magnetic stimulation induces reciprocal inhibition of motor neurons through synapses in the spinal cord.PMID:38694014 | PMC:PMC11060763 | DOI:10.1589/jpts.36.278 (Source: Health Physics)
