Simulated error training for the physics plan and chart review
CONCLUSIONS: The datasets and digital platform provide a standardized and accessible tool for training, performance assessment, and continuing education regarding the physics plan and chart review. Work is ongoing to expand the project to include more modalities, radiation oncology treatment planning and information systems, and FMs based on emerging techniques such as auto-contouring and auto-planning.PMID:38588484 | DOI:10.1002/mp.17051 (Source: Health Physics)

Vestibular Schwannoma International Study of Active Surveillance Versus Stereotactic Radiosurgery: the VISAS Study
CONCLUSION: SRS management in matched cohorts of Koos grade I and II VS patients demonstrated superior tumor control, comparable hearing preservation rates, and significantly lower odds of experiencing neurological deficits. These findings delineate the safety and efficacy of SRS in in the management of this patient population.PMID:38588868 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.04.004 (Source: Health Physics)

Establishing the Reliability of The Step Test Evaluation of Performance on Stairs (STEPS) in Multiple Sclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Stair ambulation is a challenging task, integral for mobility and independence, therefore, having a sensitive and valid reliable assessment of stair performance is critical for PwMS. The STEPS assessment is a quick, easily administered, reliable, and valid tool for assessing stair ambulation in PwMS.PMID:38588968 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2024.03.015 (Source: Health Physics)

Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, and Their Predictors Among Nursing Home Residents-Cross-Sectional Results of the BaSAlt Study
This study examined PA, SB, and their predictors among nursing home residents (n = 63). Dependent variables were accelerometry-based PA and SB. Predictor variables included in a path analysis were age, sex, body mass index, Barthel Index, cognitive status (Mini-Mental State Examination), physical performance (hand grip strength and habitual walking speed), and well-being (World Health Organization-5 well-being index). PA was very low (M steps per day = 2,433) and SB was high (M percentage of sedentary time = 89.4%). PA was significantly predicted by age (β = -0.27, p = .008), body mass index (β = -0.29, p = .002), Barthe...

Carotid Artery Stenosis and Ischemic Stroke in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer Treated with Radiotherapy: A Critical Review
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians involved in the care of HNC patients treated with RT should be aware of the increased risk of CAS and IS and the challenges in risk prediction. While there is a lack of evidence to make firm recommendations, HNC survivorship recommendations should ensure HNC survivors and primary care providers are informed of these risks and the importance of assessment and management of CVD risk factors. Future studies are required to refine risk prediction models in HNC patients, and to determine those most likely to benefit from targeted screening and initiation of early preventative strategies.PMID:38583496 | D...

Amyloid brain-dedicated PET images can diagnose Alzheimer's pathology with Centiloid Scale
CONCLUSION: The Centiloid scale applied to PET images allows for AD pathology diagnosis. The CMB scanner can be used with the Centiloid scale to automatically assist in the diagnosis of AD pathology, relieving the large burden of neurodegenerative diseases on a traditional PET/CT.PMID:38581963 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejmp.2024.103345 (Source: Health Physics)

Newly Diagnosed Mental Health Disorders in Patients with Breast Cancer Receiving Radiation Therapy
CONCLUSION: In this cohort, one in three patients with localized breast cancer developed a new MHD, predominantly related to anxiety and depression. MHD risk was higher among divorced patients, those receiving chemotherapy, and patients receiving PMRT or WBI+RNI. These findings highlight the importance of future studies and targeted interventions to support this vulnerable population.PMID:38582232 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.03.028 (Source: Health Physics)

Radiation doses received by major organs at risk in children and young adolescents treated for cancer with external beam radiation therapy: a large-scale study from 12 European countries
CONCLUSION: The detailed dose estimates provide very useful information for former patients or clinicians who have only limited knowledge about radiation therapy protocols or techniques, but who know the type and site of childhood cancer, gender, age and year of treatment. This will allow better prediction of the long-term risk of iatrogenic events and better referral to long-term follow-up clinics.PMID:38582233 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.03.032 (Source: Health Physics)

Evaluation of a National Radiation Oncology Research and Mentorship Program
CONCLUSIONS: A national research and mentorship award for medical students has shown a positive impact on participants. Medical students felt this award program motivated them to continue pursuing oncology research and a potential career in RO. The program also enhanced mentorship skills in residents and research supervisors, which encourages further RO mentorship, teaching, and exposure for future generations of students.PMID:38582234 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.03.040 (Source: Health Physics)
