A systematic review and narrative synthesis of prevalence rates, risk and protective factors for suicidal behavior in international students
International students are a crucial group for suicide prevention efforts. However, no comprehensive review of the prevalence, risk or protective factors for international student suicide has been conducted, complicating prevention efforts. The current systematic review addresses this issue by identifying the prevalence, risk, and protective factors for suicidal thoughts and behavior in international students enrolled in tertiary institutions. We searched CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC, Medline, and PsycInfo from inception to November 2023, and 24 papers met the study inclusion criteria. Nineteen studies reported on the prevalence o...

Attitude towards mental help-seeking, motivation, and economic resources in connection with positive, negative, and general psychopathological symptoms of schizophrenia: a pilot study of a psychoeducation program
ConclusionIn summary, the findings suggest that our psychoeducation program has the potential to positively impact the motivation and help-seeking attitudes of schizophrenia patients towards treatment. Moreover, there is a need for further exploration of psychoeducation programs for schizophrenia, particularly in countries facing economic challenges. This study paves the way for the development of an indigenous psychoeducation program tailored to Pakistani schizophrenia patients, with potential applicability for Urdu-speaking individuals.Clinical Trial Registrationhttps://www.thaiclinicaltrials.org/show/TCTR20210208003, id...

Former smoking, but not active smoking, is associated with delirium in postoperative ICU patients: a matched case-control study
DiscussionNicotine’s complex neuropharmacological impact on the brain is still not fully understood, especially its short-term and long-term implications for critically ill patients. Although our retrospective study cannot establish causality, our findings suggest that smoking may induce structural changes in the brain, potentially heightening the risk of postoperative delirium. Intriguingly, this effect seems to be obscured in active smokers, potentially due to the recognized neuroprotective properties of nicotine. Our results motivate future prospective studies, the results of which hold the potential to substantially ...

Exploring subgroups of acceptance prediction for e-mental health among psychotherapists-in-training: a latent class analysis
ConclusionThis study was able to show that two classes of individuals can be identified based on the UTAUT-predictors. Differences between the classes regarding Performance Expectancy and Effort Expectancy were found. Interestingly, the two classes differed in theoretical orientation but not in age or gender. Latent class analysis could help to identify subgroups and possible starting points to foster acceptance of EMH. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Evaluating the rate of reversal of fentanyl-induced respiratory depression using a novel long-acting naloxone nanoparticle, cNLX-NP
DiscussionWhile cNLX-NP alone may not sufficiently reverse F/FA overdose in a timely manner, mixing free NLX with cNLX-NP can provide a mechanism to both rapidly reverse fentanyl-related effects and maintain extended protection against synthetic opioid toxicity. These data support further development of cNLX-NP as a fast-acting and long-lasting antidote to treat F/FA-induced respiratory depression and overdose, and potentially prevent renarcotization in humans. Prospective associations of family conflict with alcohol expectancies in the adolescent brain cognitive development study: effects of race and ethnicity
ConclusionThe results indicate that family conflict is a potential risk factor for problematic alcohol expectancies for Black and White adolescents. Although we did not directly compare Black and White adolescents, our findings indicate that family conflict may operate differently for Black and White adolescents. Prevention and intervention efforts targeting family conflict may be relevant for different aspects of alcohol expectancies in Black and White families. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

A link between ghrelin and major depressive disorder: a mini review
Ghrelin is primarily responsible for regulating energy balance, as it increases appetite. However, in recent years, its new physiological functions have been discovered—it regulates lipogenesis, plays a role in the development of insulin resistance, and even acts protectively on heart muscle. Moreover, ghrelin was associated with many psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD) or schizophrenia. Ghrelin levels were elevated in patients diagnosed with depression and in patients after suicide attempts. Moreover, ghrelin was connected to depression among postmenopausal women and was shown to be a predic...
