Process and outcome of outpatient psychotherapies under clinically representative conditions in Austria: protocol and feasibility of an ongoing study
DiscussionRecruitment for this study has posed substantial challenges due to psychotherapists’ concerns regarding data protection, extensive documentation, and philosophical reservations about the study design. Consequently, we recruited fewer participants than initially planned. Despite these hurdles, qualitative data collection has shown notable success. Given psychotherapists’ busy schedules and reluctance to participate, more potent external incentives or a legal obligation may be necessary to encourage participation in future studies. Deployment of attention to facial expressions varies as a function of emotional quality —but not in alexithymic individuals
DiscussionOur results show evidence of attentional biases for positive and fearful social information in non-alexithymic individuals, but not in alexithymic individuals. The lack of spontaneous attentional preference for these social stimuli in alexithymia might contribute to a vulnerability for developing emotional disorders. Our data also suggest that briefly presented emotion words may not facilitate gaze orientation toward emotion-congruent stimuli. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Reduced body-image disturbance by body-image interventions is associated with neural-response changes in visual and social processing regions: a preliminary study
DiscussionWe identified distinct neural mechanisms (bodily visuospatial and socio-cognitive processing) associated with the reduction in each component of body-image disturbance. Our results imply that different neural mechanisms are related to reduced perceptual disturbance and the expression thereof, whereas similar neural mechanisms are related to the reduction and expression of affective disturbance. Considering the small sample size of this study, our results should be regarded as preliminary. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Addressing psychosocial needs in patients with Long-COVID (PsyLoCo-Study): study protocol of a pilot-study of a specialized modular intervention
DiscussionThe pilot study will evaluate a 12-session treatment manual for Long/Post-COVID sufferers and the therapy components it contains. The analysis will provide insights into the extent to which psychotherapeutic treatment approaches improve the symptoms of Long/Post-COVID sufferers. The treatment manual is designed to be carried out by psychotherapists as well as people with basic training in psychotherapeutic techniques. This approach was chosen to enable a larger number of practitioners to provide therapeutic support for Long/Post-COVID patients. After completion of the pilot study, it is planned to follow up with ...

Five-week music therapy improves overall symptoms in schizophrenia by modulating theta and gamma oscillations
DiscussionThese findings help us to better understand the neural mechanisms by which music therapy improves overall symptoms in schizophrenia and provide more evidence for the application of music therapy in other psychiatric disorders. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Treatment of antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses
ConclusionAdjunctive dopamine agonists have been proven to be effective and safe for the treatment of antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia. Among the researched treatments, adding aripiprazole may be the most appropriate. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Utilizing systematic Mendelian randomization to identify potential therapeutic targets for mania
ConclusionSBNO2, PBX2, RAMP3, and QPCT could serve as potential target genes for mania treatment and deserve further basic and clinical research. Medicinal target genes regulate the phenylalanine metabolism pathway to achieve the treatment of mania. Phenylalanine is an important intermediate substance in the treatment of mania that is regulated by drug target genes. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Non-adaptive cognitive emotion regulation mediates the relationship between disease uncertainty and acute stress disorder in patients with ischaemic stroke
ConclusionGiven that individuals with ASD are susceptible to PTSD, it is critical to follow up hospitalized patients with ischemic stroke for screening for PTSD and referral to appropriate psychological services. Maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation can increase the impact of uncertainty on the traumatic experience of stroke patients. Therefore, health care institutions should increase their efforts to provide psychosocial support services to hospitalized patients and make continuous efforts to screen for symptoms of trauma and psychological distress in hospitalized stroke patients. Prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder and associated factors among displaced people in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsIn this review, the pooled prevalence of PTSD among displaced people in Africa was high. Demographic characteristics (female, single, and unemployed), substance use disorder, and depression were risk factors for PTSD among displaced people. This finding might help the stakeholders (mental health policy makers, administrators, and mental health professionals) to address the prevention, early screening, and management of PTSD among displaced people and to give attention to more vulnerable bodies.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO, identifier CRD42023411371. The effect of an e-intervention on intellectual disability stigma among Nigerian and Kenyan internet users: a comparative randomised controlled trial
This study assessed the impact of an e-intervention to reduce intellectual disability (ID) stigma among Nigerian and Kenyan internet-users.MethodParticipants aged 18+ and citizens of Nigeria and Kenya were recruited through online advertising. Qualtrics, a web survey platform, randomly assigned (1:1) participants to watch either a short experimental or control film, while masked to their assignment. The experimental film featured education about ID and indirect contact. The control film was on an unrelated topic. Their attitudes were measured on three dimensions (affect, cognitions and behaviour) at three time points (base...
