Catatonia and melancholia interface: exploring a new paradigm for evaluation and treatment. A case series and literature review
ConclusionThe present study argues for a closer relationship between melancholia and catatonia based on our case series, historical review, overlap in phenomenology, and response to treatment. We propose provisional [Mahgoub] criteria for patients with severe depression and melancholia. The role of GABA agonists, such as lorazepam, can be explored as an option for patients with treatment-resistant depression who meet these criteria for melancholia.LimitationsAbsence of a standardized, systematic assessment tool and a small sample size. Principles to guide research and policy on psychological well-being in remote island developing states in the South Pacific
Adverse climatic changes around the globe and predictions of catastrophic and irreversible alteration in global weather patterns, temperature rise, and coast-line habitability require a careful examination of consequences on the resilience and mental health of people who will endure these changes. This paper is concerned with the South Pacific region. This geography has benefited from a relatively stable climate that is seen in the lush and vibrant natural world with many unique species of plants and animals exclusively found here. This paper examines the psychological profile of the people in the South Pacific using an ev...

Differences in predictive factors for post-traumatic stress disorder encompassing partial PTSD and full PTSD: a cross-sectional study among individuals exposed to the November 13, 2015 Paris attacks
ConclusionThis study emphasizes the significance of examining peri-traumatic reactions in PTSD development, suggesting its potential as a straightforward screening tool for post-traumatic stress disorder. It also underscores the influence of prior traumatic experiences, before de novo traumatization, in shaping vulnerability to PTSD and illuminates the crucial role of compromised control of intrusive thoughts that could perpetuate PTSD. Intraindividual time-varying dynamic network of affects: linear autoregressive mixed-effects models for ecological momentary assessment
An interesting recent development in emotion research and clinical psychology is the discovery that affective states can be modeled as a network of temporally interacting moods or emotions. Additionally, external factors like stressors or treatments can influence the mood network by amplifying or dampening the activation of specific moods. Researchers have turned to multilevel autoregressive models to fit these affective networks using intensive longitudinal data gathered through ecological momentary assessment. Nonetheless, a more comprehensive examination of the performance of such models is warranted. In our study, we f...

Insights from the Twittersphere: a cross-sectional study of public perceptions, usage patterns, and geographical differences of tweets discussing cocaine
DiscussionThe findings underscore the significance of cocaine as a current social and political issue, with a predominant focus on political and social denunciation in the majority of tweets. Notably, the study reveals a concentration of tweets from the United States and South American countries, reflecting the high prevalence of cocaine-related disorders and overdose cases in these regions. Alarmingly, the study highlights the trivialization of cocaine consumption on Twitter, accompanied by a misleading promotion of its health benefits, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted interventions and antidrug content on social ...

Serdexmethylphenidate/dexmethylphenidate for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: dose optimization from a laboratory classroom study
ConclusionA high percentage of subjects were responders upon reaching their final optimized dose. SDX/d-MPH demonstrated significant reductions in ADHD severity in children based on the Conners 3rd Edition-Parent scores. Determining the optimal dosage of SDX/d-MPH and its effect on ADHD severity could enable the development of a more clinically relevant treatment regimen in children with ADHD. Somatic symptom profile in patients with chronic heart failure with and without depressive comorbidity
ConclusionsAmong patients with CHF, somatic symptoms are more pronounced in those with depressive comorbidity than those without depressive comorbidity. This finding is especially true for cardiac symptoms independent of CHF severity. The potential interpretation of somatic symptoms as correlates of depressive comorbidity must be recognized in clinical practice. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Old tech but not low tech: telephone-based treatment provision for substance use
The future of telemedicine for substance use treatment hangs by a thread, as the United States awaits approval of proposed regulations and laws to increase care access in light of the 2022 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services revisions allowing for audio-only care. Telemedicine improves patient care access and outcomes. Audio-only telemedicine can be an effective and viable modality for individuals without technology resources (devices, internet services, and literacy), those with reduced telehealth service utilization (Black individuals or those with unstable housing, who are older, with low income, or with low educ...

Case report: Avoiding intolerance to antipsychotics through a personalized treatment approach based on pharmacogenetics
ConclusionWith the case presented, we have shown that taking into account the pharmacogenetic characteristics of the patient can explain the response to antipsychotic treatment and associated side effects. In addition, pharmacogenetic testing enabled an informed choice of the most appropriate drug and optimal dose adjustment. This approach makes it possible to avoid or minimize potentially serious dose-related ADRs and treatment ineffectiveness. However, due to the complexity of psychopathology and the polypharmacy used in this field, it is of great importance to conduct further pharmacokinetic and pharmacogenetic studies ...

Reading comprehension improvement in autism
In this study, we examined the effectiveness of the V/V intervention by comparing reading comprehension scores between groups and across time. Participants included a sample of autistic children (AUT-EXP; n=22) and a waitlist control group of autistic children (AUT-WLC; n=17) with reading comprehension difficulties, as well as a sample of non-autistic children (Non-AUT; n=26) (all age 8-13 years). AUT-EXP and AUT-WLC groups completed a battery of cognitive assessments during pre and post tests. We also analyzed whether cognitive assessment scores predicted reading comprehension, and examined the moderating effects of group...
