Post-traumatic stress and future substance use outcomes: leveraging antecedent factors to stratify risk
ConclusionPTSD symptoms were highly associated with tobacco and alcohol use, while the association with prospective cannabis use is not clear. Findings suggest that understanding the different risk stratification that occurs can aid in tailoring interventions to populations at greatest risk to best mitigate the comorbidity between PTSD symptoms and future substance use outcomes. We demonstrate that this is particularly salient for tobacco use and, to some extent, alcohol use, while cannabis is less likely to be impacted by PTSD symptoms across the strata. Predictor of smoking cessation among school-going adolescents in Indonesia: a secondary analysis based on the transtheoretical model of behavioral change
ConclusionAddressing age, gender, cultural influences, environmental factors, and attitudes towards smoking through tailored interventions is vital for aiding smoking cessation in Indonesian adolescents. Strengthened tobacco control in schools and public places is recommended to bolster these efforts. Longitudinal studies are required to explore the evolving patterns of smoking cessation behaviors over time, enhancing our understanding of the factors influencing sustained cessation. Nature-based virtual reality intervention to manage stress in family caregivers of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients: a two-phase pilot study protocol
This study comprises two phases. Phase I of the study will be a single-arm pre-post design focused on assessing the feasibility and acceptability of the VR intervention. Phase II of the study will be a prospective randomized controlled group design to examine the effectiveness of the VR intervention on perceived stress. Adults (≥ 18 years) who serve as primary caregivers for a person who will undergo an allogeneic HSCT will be recruited. Fifteen participants will be enrolled for Phase I and 94 participants for Phase II (Active VR arm N=47; Sham VR arm N=47). The nature-based immersive VR program contains 360° high-defin...

Current status and influencing factors of family resilience in families of children with epilepsy: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionThe families of children with epilepsy presented appropriate resilience after the children were diagnosed with epilepsy. Family resilience was correlated with multiple factors, subjective and objective support could be protective factors, comorbidity and parental depression could be vulnerability factors of family resilience. Therefore, future psychosocial interventions could focus on enhancing subjective support and objective support, reducing parental depression, and screening for epilepsy comorbidity to promote the family resilience of children with epilepsy. Anxiety in Polish adult patients with inborn errors of immunity: a cross-sectional study
In this study, we aimed to assess the prevalence and level of anxiety symptoms in adult Polish patients with IEI and explore the determinants of anxiety in this group of patients.MethodsData from 105 Polish patients with IEI were collected via the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), brief illness perception questionnaire (B-IPQ), illness cognition questionnaire (ICQ), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and a questionnaire on general health and demographic data. For statistical analyses of data, the normality of distribution of quantitative data was assessed, and internal consistency of tests was investigated ...

When do drugs trigger criminal behavior? a machine learning analysis of offenders and non-offenders with schizophrenia and comorbid substance use disorder
The objective of this study is to explore the most distinguishing factors between offending and non-offending patients diagnosed with SSD and comorbid SUD using supervised machine learning.MethodsA total of 269 offender patients and 184 non-offender patients, all diagnosed with SSD and SUD, were assessed using supervised machine learning algorithms.ResultsFailures during opening, referring to rule violations during a permitted temporary leave from an inpatient ward or during the opening of an otherwise closed ward, was found to be the most influential distinguishing factor, closely followed by non-compliance with medicatio...

Efficacy of eHealth interventions to reduce depression symptoms in individuals with obesity: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionEHealth interventions that address and target both mental and physical health with interactive strategies calls for better efficacy in the reduction of depression symptoms. Future eHealth interventions that target depression symptoms in individuals with obesity should integrate digital strategies that address both mental and physical health through interactive modules. Methylome-wide and meQTL analysis helps to distinguish treatment response from non-response and pathogenesis markers in schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a complex condition with entwined genetic and epigenetic risk factors, posing a challenge to disentangle the intermixed pathological and therapeutic epigenetic signatures. To resolve this, we performed 850K methylome-wide and 700K genome-wide studies on the same set of schizophrenia patients by stratifying them into responders, non-responders, and drug-naïve patients. The key genes that signified the response were followed up using real-time gene expression studies to understand the effect of antipsychotics at the gene transcription level. The study primarily implicates hypermethylation in therapeutic res...

Prevalence and factors associated with fear of COVID-19 in military personnel during the second epidemic wave in Peru
DiscussionTwo out of ten military personnel were afraid of COVID-19. Our results highlight the need for targeted interventions addressing the factors contributing to fear of COVID-19 among military personnel, emphasizing the significance of mental health support and preventive measures within this specific population. Genetic background determines synaptic phenotypes in Arid1b-mutant mice
ARID1B, a chromatin remodeler, is strongly implicated in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Two previous studies on Arid1b-mutant mice with the same exon 5 deletion in different genetic backgrounds revealed distinct synaptic phenotypes underlying the behavioral abnormalities: The first paper reported decreased inhibitory synaptic transmission in layer 5 pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) region of the heterozygous Arid1b-mutant (Arid1b+/−) brain without changes in excitatory synaptic transmission. In the second paper, in contrast, we did not observe any inhibitory synaptic change in layer 5 mPFC pyram...

Tracing the paths: a systematic review of mediators of complex trauma and complex post-traumatic stress disorder
This study aims to systematically review evidence of mediating factors linking complex trauma exposure in childhood (birth to eighteen years of age) and subsequent development of CPTSD (via self-reports and diagnostic assessments). All clinical, at-risk and community-sampled articles on three online databases (PsycINFO, MedLine and Embase) were systematically searched, along with grey literature from ProQuest. Fifteen articles were eligible for inclusion according to pre-determined eligibility criteria and a search strategy. Five categories of mediating processes were identified: 1) dissociative processes; 2) relationship ...
