Re-imagining crisis care: experiences of delivering and receiving the Assured brief psychological intervention for people presenting to Emergency Departments with self-harm
BackgroundRisk of suicide is increased immediately following emergency department (ED) attendance for self-harm. Evidence suggests that brief psychological interventions delivered in EDs are effective for self-harm. The Assured intervention comprises an enhanced biopsychosocial assessment in the ED, collaborative safety planning and three rapid solution focused follow-up sessions.AimWe addressed the following research questions: What were ED mental health liaison practitioners’ and patients’ experiences of the Assured intervention? What were the barriers and facilitators? What might the mechanisms be for improving expe...

The relationship between executive function and the association of motor coordination difficulties and social communication deficits in autistic children
ConclusionEF partially mediates the motor coordination and social communication correlation among autistic children. We suggest that motor coordination should be included in the routine evaluation of autistic surveillance and rehabilitation procedures. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Visual Schema Displacement Therapy versus Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy versus waitlist in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder: results of a randomized clinical trial
ConclusionThis study supports VSDT’s efficacy in treating PTSD, offering a valuable therapeutic option comparable to EMDR, with significant reductions in PTSD symptoms and but no difference with EMDR or the control condition for depressive symptoms and general psychopathology, and no reported adverse events. Aerobic capacity and mitochondrial function in bipolar disorder: a longitudinal study during acute phases and after clinical remission
ConclusionsOur preliminary data showed that lower basal oxygen consumption may be linked to greater mitochondrial respiratory capacity, and maximum oxygen uptake during the exercise task was associated with lower basal mitochondrial respiration, suggesting that lower oxygen requirements could be associated with greater mitochondrial capacity. These findings should be replicated in larger samples stratified for manic and depressive states. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Is there evidence for factorial invariance of the COVID Stress Scales? an analysis of North American and cross-cultural populations
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental health of more citizens globally than any previous modern viral outbreak. In response to the psychological challenges associated with COVID-19, the COVID Stress Scales (CSS) were developed to assess the presence and severity of COVID-related distress. The initial North American validation study of the CSS identified that the scale comprised five factors: danger and contamination fears, fear of socioeconomic consequences, xenophobia, checking and reassurance seeking, and traumatic stress symptoms. The CSS have since been validated across a multitude of international populations. How...

A qualitative internet-based study of parental experiences of adolescents suffering from affective disorders with non-suicidal self-injury during the COVID-19 pandemic
ConclusionThis Internet-based research is the first to explore the internal experiences of parents of adolescents with affective disorders experiencing NSSI during the COVID-19 pandemic. It sheds light on how parents, in response to their children’s NSSI behaviors, undergo resilience following negative experiences, explore more open and supportive family model. Despite these positive outcomes, parents express a need for increased knowledge about NSSI illness care and a desire for professional assistance. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Depression and hepatobiliary diseases: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionDepression is a susceptibility factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and the causal effect of genetic susceptibility to depression on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is mediated by waist-hip ratio, hypertension, and daytime nap. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Model of structural equations on the perception of aspects of school life and substance consumption as predictors of problem behavior in adolescents
The objective was to establish explanatory models of the relationship between various school variables with the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis; determining its direct and/or indirect relationship with problematic behaviors.Materials and methodsThe study was cross-sectional with a sample of 346 students (Main Age=14.81; 54% women) from secondary education. Structural Equation Model (SEM) were carried to analyze the relationship between the dimensions of the Scale of perception of aspects of school life and alcohol, tobacco and cannabis consume with the presence of Problematic Behavior.ResultsProblem behavior w...

“FREED instils a bit of hope in the eating disorder community… that things can change.”: an investigation of clinician views on implementation facilitators and challenges from the rapid scaling of the First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders programme
ConclusionThe FREED model appears to be desirable to clinical staff. Wider team and managerial support was perceived to be particularly important to its successful implementation, as were the national network and supervision. Key areas of complexity include staffing issues and high ED acuity/prevalence. These barriers to implementation need to be managed and investment continued to expand and improve early intervention for EDs further. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Investigating machine learning and natural language processing techniques applied for detecting eating disorders: a systematic literature review
Recent developments in the fields of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) have shown significant improvements in automatic text processing. At the same time, the expression of human language plays a central role in the detection of mental health problems. Whereas spoken language is implicitly assessed during interviews with patients, written language can also provide interesting insights to clinical professionals. Existing work in the field often investigates mental health problems such as depression or anxiety. However, there is also work investigating how the diagnostics of eating disorders can ben...
