Tissue response following implantation with the posterior dynamic distraction device (PDDD) in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)
ConclusionThe PDDD induced minimal host reaction with little or no degeneration, inflammation or fibrosis. No changes present could be expected to promote device failure. The PDDD implant for treating AIS is well-tolerated and locally safe. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Recovery of the Japanese orthopedic association back pain evaluation questionnaire score and walking ability following lumbar spinal stenosis surgery
ConclusionOur results demonstrated the early postoperative recovery course of JOABPEQ and 6MWD. In the fusion group, significant changes in lumbar spine dysfunction started at 6  months postoperatively. These findings could help medical staff explain postoperative recovery to patients after lumbar spinal stenosis surgery and in their decision making regarding surgery. Development and validation of a machine learning-based postoperative prognostic model for plasma cell neoplasia with spinal lesions as initial clinical manifestations: a single-center cohort study
ConclusionsThe GNB model has the best performance and high reliability in predicting postoperative outcomes. Variables such as ISS stage and DS stage were significant in influencing patient prognosis. This study enhances the ability to identify patients at risk of poor outcomes, thereby aiding clinical decision-making. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Pain-related single nucleotide polymorphisms: association with lumbar spinal stenosis patient experience and non-surgical treatment outcomes
ConclusionsNPY rs16147 and COMT rs4680 are important potential biomarkers associated with pain and function. NPY genotype may be useful in predicting response to non-surgical treatments in older adults with LSS. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Risk factors for neurophysiological events related to intraoperative halo-femoral traction in spinal deformity surgery
ConclusionNeurophysiologic events due to IOHFT were common, with the majority in patients with NMS. A shorter stature was a risk factor, and larger Cobb angle and stiffer curve were associated with IOHFT-events. Events occurred at any stage of surgery and involved upper and lower limbs. With an adequate response on IOHFT events, none of the patients had postoperative neurological impairments due to IOHFT. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Unexpected positive culture (UPC) in adults revision spine surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of incidence, risk factors, and management
ConclusionsOne-third of patients undergoing spine revision surgery revealed UPC in this study. Each UPC pathogen interpretation and antibiotic use decision should be interpreted case by case.Level of evidence: IV. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Neck and shoulder pain in thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis 10 years after posterior spinal fusion
ConclusionNSP was associated with deterioration in SRS-22 scores, indicating that NSP is a clinically significant long-term issue in PSF for thoracic AIS. Restoring or maintaining the TK and T1 slopes, which are controllable factors during PSF, may improve cervical lordosis and alleviate NSP at 10-year follow-up. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Impact of osteosclerosis on cervical pedicle screw insertion using preoperative CT-based navigation
ConclusionsThe screw perforation rate of Grade 2 or higher in CPS insertion using preoperative CT-based navigation was 8.0%. Since osteosclerosis was an independent factor related to CPS deviation, additional care may be required during insertion into affected vertebrae. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Traumatic thoracic spine fracture: can we predict when MRI would modify the fracture classification or decision-making compared to CT alone?
ConclusionsCT yielded (89%) accuracy  in diagnosing PLC injury in TSFs. The addition of MRI after CT substantially changed the AO classification or TLAOISS, compared to CT alone, thus suggesting an added value of MRI for PLC assessment for TSFs classification. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Optimization of radiation doses for open lumbar spinal fusion using C-arm fluoroscopy and impact on radiation-induced cancer: a pilot study
ConclusionThis study demonstrates the feasibility of setting 6.25  fps for TLIF with and without PLF. By halving the fps, radiation-induced cancer risk could be almost divided by two, without compromising surgical outcome. Finally, after optimization, the risk of developing radiation-induced cancer was less than one in a million. (Source: European Spine Journal)

The effect of C2 screw type on perioperative outcomes and long-term stability after C2 –T2 posterior cervical decompression and fusion
ConclusionThere were no significant differences in fusion status, hardware complications, and radiographic and clinical outcomes based on C2 screw type following C2 –T2 PCDF. Accordingly, intraoperative usage criteria can be flexible based on patient vertebral artery positioning and surgeon comfort level. (Source: European Spine Journal)

A simple method for the selection of valid spinopelvic parameters and lumbar lordosis in patients with transitional lumbosacral vertebrae
ConclusionsBecause PI is unique for every individual, the endplate whose PI value is closer to the normative value should be selected as the reference sacral endplate in patients with TLSV. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Could the different surgical goals of fusion and non-fusion also be achieved in combination within the same patient? Clinical and radiological outcome of hybrid cervical spine surgery
ConclusionsHS results in preservation of the segmental motion in the cTDR and fast and solid fusion in the cage cohort simultaneously. Patient safety was proven. In carefully selected cases, HS is a safe and viable treatment option by choosing the right “philosophy” level per level. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Impact of intraoperative imaging on decision-making during spine surgery: a survey among spine surgeons using simulated intraoperative images
ConclusionWhen provided with 3D imaging, spine surgeons not only intend to intraoperatively reposition pedicle screws at risk of causing postoperative complications more often but also screws with acceptable positions. This study highlights the potential of intraoperative 3D imaging as well as the need for consensus on how to act on intraoperative 3D information. (Source: European Spine Journal)
