The indication of fusion to the pelvis in neuromuscular scoliosis is based on the underlying disease rather than on pelvic obliquity
DiscussionThe decision on instrumentation length should take flexibility and disease into consideration. If the trunk is centred over the pelvis, deterioration will not occur in absence of spasticity. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Nerve root retraction time during lumbar endoscopic discectomy: association with new onset radiculitis, a post-operative neurologic complication
ConclusionsThis is the first study in discectomy literature to show that new onset radiculitis and poorer outcomes in VAS leg correlate with longer nerve retraction time at early and later time points. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Characteristics of paraspinal muscle degeneration in patients with adult degenerative scoliosis
ConclusionThere were significant differences in the MV and FI of PSM on both sides of the spine in ADS patients. It was determined that the PSM of ADS showed different degrees of degeneration in different levels of the lumbar spine and were positively correlated with Cobb angle. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Iliac crest bone graft versus cell-based grafts to augment spinal fusion: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionCell-based therapy offers a promising alternative to ICBG in spinal fusion surgery, which could help reduce the associated morbidity to patients. This review found that cell-based therapy is non-inferior to iliac crest bone graft and may offer patients an alternative treatment option with fewer complications and reduced post-operative pain. However, the literature to date is limited by heterogeneity of the cell preparation and grafting process. Future research with a unified approach to the cell preparation process is required to fully delineate the potential advantages of this technology. (Source: European Spine Journal)

The correlation between osteoporotic vertebrae fracture risk and bone mineral density measured by quantitative computed tomography and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsBoth vBMD detected by QCT and aBMD detected by DXA could discriminate fracture status in the spine, and vBMD performed a stronger correlation with fracture risk.Trial registration: PROSPERO 2022 CRD42022349185. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Cohort study of postural sway and low back pain: the Copenhagen City Heart Study
ConclusionWhen using multivariate statistical analysis, confounding factors such as male gender, higher age, larger body height, low education level, smoking, and low activity level explained the association between low back pain and postural sway. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Adult spinal deformity correction surgery using age-adjusted alignment thresholds: clinical outcomes and mechanical complication rates. A systematic review of the literature
ConclusionThe results extrapolated from this review are interesting, as for the same HRQoL the U group had a lower MC rate. Unfortunately, the results are inconsistent, mainly because of the low quality of the included studies and the lack of reporting of some important patient- and surgery-related factors. L1-pelvic angle: a convenient measurement to attain optimal deformity correction
ConclusionL1PA was modestly correlated with SVA and T1PA, and achieving ideal L1PA was associated with lower rates of rod fracture/pseudarthrosis. Future studies are warranted to better define the clinical implications of achieving a normal L1PA.Level of evidenceIII. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Development and temporal validation of clinical prediction models for 1-year disability and pain after lumbar decompressive surgery. The Norwich Lumbar Surgery Predictor (development version)
ConclusionImportant PROM predictors are baseline PROMs, specific co-morbidities, work status, condition duration, previous lumbar operation, female, and smoking status. The ODI model predicted the likelihood of achieving a satisfactory state of both disability and pain. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Comprehensive geriatric assessment to predict adverse events in elderly patients undergoing posterior lumbar fusion surgery
ConclusionsThese results indicate that preoperative screening preoperative delirium, cognitive, nutrition and CCI are essential to prevent postoperative major AEs of the surgical elderly. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Beneficial and harmful effects of physical activity on care-seeking for low back pain: the AUTBACK study
ConclusionPeople who engage in higher baseline volumes of sedentary behaviour or physical activity in the household setting (e.g. housework, gardening, yard work, general household maintenance) utilise 1.6 times more care for LBP over 1 year. Findings suggest that higher volumes of these behaviours may be harmful for LBP. No intensities, volumes, or domains of physical activity demonstrated clear benefits for LBP. Where feasible, patients and clinicians should collaborate to screen and develop strategies to reduce engagement in sedentary behaviour or physical activity in the household setting. Contextual factors (e.g. pati...
