Clinical outcomes of uniportal compared with biportal endoscopic decompression for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsCurrent evidence shows no significant differences in most clinical outcomes between uniportal and biportal surgery. UBE may have a better ODI score at the end of the follow-up compared to uniportal. Further studies are required before drawing a definite conclusion.Study registrationPROSPERO prospective register of systematic reviews: Registration N º. May bending radiographs be replaced by magnetic resonance imaging in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis?
ConclusionSpinal curves showed a significant correlation between bending radiographs and recumbent images (MRI). In our group of patients, a Cobb angle of the minor curve of less than 30 ° in the MRI indicated that this minor curve was non-structural according to the classification of Lenke. Significance of paraspinal muscle quality in risk between single and multiple osteoporotic vertebral fractures
ConclusionsThe pure muscle volumes of the multifidus, psoas major, and quadratus lumborum were lower in patients with multiple OVFs than in those with a single OVF. Furthermore, the inter-correlation among all the paraspinal muscles indicate that the muscle-bone crosstalk profoundly existed in vertebral fracture cascade. Therefore, special attention to paraspinal muscle quality is needed to prevent progression to multiple OVFs. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Asymmetric distribution of Modic changes in patients with lumbar disc herniation
ConclusionAMCs were a more common phenomenon than SMCs in this study. The asymmetric and symmetric distribution of MCs was closely related to LDH position. AMCs were related to leg pain and higher pain levels. Surgery can achieve satisfactory clinical improvement for asymmetric and symmetric MCs. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Clinical and radiological outcomes of one-level cervical corpectomy with an expandable cage for three-column uncomplicated subaxial type «B» injures: a multicenter retrospective study
ConclusionsOne-level cervical corpectomy with an expandable cage, despite a poor fusion rate, can be considered a feasible and relatively safe method for treating three-column uncomplicated subaxial type «B» injures, with the benefit of immediate stability, anatomical reduction, and direct decompression of the spinal cord. While no one in our series had any catastrophic complications, we did note a high complication rate. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Are serum thyroid hormone, parathormone, calcium, and vitamin D levels associated with lumbar spine degeneration? A cross-sectional observational clinical study
ConclusionSerum hormone, vitamin D, and calcium levels were associated with not only IVDD and Modic changes but also with fatty infiltration in the paraspinal muscles, mainly at upper lumbar levels in patients with symptomatic backache presenting to a tertiary care center. Complex inflammatory, metabolic, and mechanical factors present in the backstage of spine degeneration. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Bibliometric analysis and description of research trends on transforaminal full-endoscopic approach on the spine for the last two-decades
ConclusionThe bibliometric study showed a growing trend of research on transforaminal full-endoscopic spine surgery over the past 20  years. It has shown a significant increase in the number of authors, institutions, and international collaborating countries. South Korea, the United States, and China dominate the related areas. A growing body of evidence has revealed that TFES has leapfrogged from its infancy stage and gradually entered a mature development stage. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Is procalcitonin a reliable indicator of sepsis in spinal cord injury patients: an observational cohort study
ConclusionIn SCI individuals, there was a correlation between serum PCT levels and septicaemia. Alongside this, PCT appeared to be more consistent throughout the study population when compared with CRP and WBC. However, this was a preliminary study and further research is required on a larger scale. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Early cement augmentation may be a good treatment option for pain relief for osteoporotic compression fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionBoth early and late timeframes for cement augmentation offered significant improvement in pain relief, with similar post-operative absolute pain score, kyphotic angle, cement leakage and adjacent vertebral fractures. Early surgery may offer substantial pain relief in patients presenting with pain as early as  <  2–4 weeks of VCFs. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Minimally invasive lateral single-position surgery for multilevel degenerative lumbar spine disease: feasibility and perioperative results in a single Latin-American spine center
ConclusionProcedural time and blood loss were similar to those reported in literature. No severe lesions, postoperative infections or reinterventions took place. Although it was a small number of patients and further clinical trials are needed, LSP for multiple levels is apparently safe with adequate outcomes which may improve efficiency in the operating room. Association of frailty with healthcare resource utilization after open thoracic/thoracolumbar posterior spinal fusion for adult spinal deformity
ConclusionOur study identified HFRS to be significantly associated with prolonged hospitalizations and non-routine discharge. Other factors that were found to be associated with increased healthcare resource utilization include age, Hispanic race, West hospital region, large hospital size, and increasing number of AEs. Estimated cumulative radiation exposure in patients treated for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
ConclusionThe cumulative effective radiation doses rendered to AIS patients as part of their treatment and follow-up were relatively low. However, every exposure to ionising radiation for medical imaging purposes should be minimised. (Source: European Spine Journal)
