Defining “successful” treatment outcomes in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a scoping review
ConclusionThis study identified that no articles employed qualitative measures of describing the psychosocial implications of AIS in defining treatment success. Although quantitative measures have merit in clinical diagnoses and management, there is increasing value in using qualitative methods such as thematic analysis in guiding clinicians to develop a biopsychosocial approach for patient care. The clinical role of preoperative fulcrum-bending and supine side-bending radiographs on the prediction of curve correction in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
ConclusionFBR is predictive of postoperative correction angle of the structural curve, whereas SBR is predictive of postoperative correction angle of the nonstructural curve. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Management strategies for the painless foot drop: a systematic review of the literature
ConclusionThis systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrates a role for surgery in facilitating the neurological recovery of patients with a painless foot drop. Large randomised controlled studies are required to characterise the role of operative intervention in these patients and compare outcomes between patients with painless and painful foot drop. Prediction of outcomes for symptomatic spinal cavernous malformation surgery: a multicenter prospective clinical study
ConclusionsAdmission size of the lesion, morphology, symptom duration, AIS grade and the presence of subarachnoid hemorrhage were strong outcome predictors regarding prognostication of neurological outcome in postoperative patients with SCMs. A decision to surgically remove a symptomatic SCM should be justified by systematic analysis of all factors potentially affecting outcome. Evaluating 5-year outcomes of interlaminar devices as an adjunct to decompression for symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis
ConclusionOur study found that in the management of LSS, clinical outcomes between those patients undergoing decompression alone compared to decompression with ILD showed statistically significant improvement in VAS back pain and radiological parameters namely foraminal height and posterior disc height at the 5-year mark. ILD does not predispose to increased reoperation rates. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Sacroiliac joint degeneration in degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis and related risk factors: a retrospective study
ConclusionsSIJ degeneration was more severe in patients with than without DLS. We should take SIJ degeneration into consideration when diagnosing and treating DLS especially those who had undergone previous hysterectomy or showed sagittal malalignment. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Validity of the short musculoskeletal function assessment questionnaire in patients with a spine fracture
ConclusionThe SMFA indices are highly correlated with ODI in patients with a spine fracture. The Dysfunction index and Bother index, or selected SMFA items, may be used to assess outcome in patients with spine fractures as an alternative to ODI. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Correlation between kidney function and mortality in pyogenic spondylodiscitis: the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) as new predictive parameter?
DiscussionPreoperative GFR values showed a significant correlation with in-hospital mortality in patients with spondylodiscitis, when graded according to the KDIGO stages. Furthermore, a GFR of < 29 ml/mL contributes to a longer ICU stay, postoperative complications and a longer total hospital stay. Therefore, the preoperative GFR could be a marker of kidney function and as a valuable predictive risk factor regarding the clinical in-hospital course of patients suffering from pyogenic spondylodiscitis. The effect of various options for decompression of degenerated lumbar spine motion segments on the range of motion: a biomechanical in vitro study
ConclusionUnilateral and/or bilateral decompressive surgery resulted in a statistically insignificant ROM increase, whereas complete laminectomy showed statistically significant ROM increase. If this ROM increase also has an impact on the clinical outcome and how to identify segments at risk for secondary lumbar instability should be evaluated in further studies. Residual motion of different posterior instrumentation and interbody fusion constructs
Conclusionbl-PLIF and TLIF show similarly low residual motion in both PS and CS constructs, but ul-PLIF results in increased motion. The fs-TLIF technique is able to further decrease motion compared to fr-TLIF in both the CS and PS constructs. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Do MRI-derived muscle moment-arms in patients with chronic low back pain differ from healthy individuals? A comparative study
ConclusionsThere was a significant difference in muscle moment-arms of the lumbar spine's prime stabilizer (psoas) and primary locomotors (rectus abdominis and obliques) between LBP patients and healthy individuals. This difference in the moment-arms leads to altered compressive forces at intervertebral discs and may be one of the risk factors for LBP. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Initial learning curve after switching to uniportal endoscopic discectomy for lumbar disc herniations
ConclusionsEndoscopic discectomy was shown to be safe and effective for symptomatic disc herniations in an ambulatory setting. Median operative time decreases by half over the first 50 patients in our learning curve, while reoperation rates remained similar without the need for hospital transfer or conversion to an open procedure in an ambulatory setting.Level of evidenceLevel III, prospective cohort.
